Looks great and thanks for the info, I'd love to get a p228 top end for my 229.

To your question on mags, isn't the 229-1 magazine designation specific for the new E2 frames? I would definitely stay away from them since you have the older frame, the new frames/mags have differen't dimensions.

I just checked and my p228 mags fit perfectly in my p229 frame so I would go that route. MecGar's are my favorite: https://www.exilemachine.net/shop/me...-bl-63991.html

No, my 229 is .40, but the 9mm and .40/.357 frames are all the same size. When Sig switched to US production of frames and E2 grip the dimensions changed and I believe the 229-1 mags are just a little thinner than old style.

My 229 .40 mags and p228 mags fit identically in my 229 frame (229 mags do not fit in a 228 though.) Personally I'd buy a MecGar p229 9mm mag or a MecGar p228 9mm mag, I believe both would work equally well for you.

A 229 with e2 grips indeed takes the thinner magazine. Item Number/Product Code for a Cali 10 round 9 mm magazine is MAG-229-9-10-E2.

Just to clear up some confusion.

The all pre-E Squared frames for the 9mm and the .40/357SIG 229 models are different...the slides are different too. The 9mm 229 were basically domestically made 228 frames (with the added rail) and slides.

The E Squared limited edition signaled the introduction of the 229-1 frames which are now used for all 229 models regardless of caliber...that is why 229-1 9mm magazines will not fit previous 9mm 229 frames.

All 9mm 229 magazines will fit in .40/357Sig frames, they'll just be loose

I apologize for my ignorance, why are P228's so sought after?

I have a West German one, and I just wanted to know.

Thanks, I know I could search, but If you know I would like to be filled in.

This conversion been posted about many times over on the SigForum... if I recall, the 229-1 9mm mag will work for your conversion. The reason is that your frame is that of the older 229 frame for the 40/357, which takes the "step" magazines (as I call them). So the newer 229-1 E2 mags will fit and also feed 9mm correctly. If you have 228 mags... they will work in your 229 (Germany 40/357) frame but will rattle. Get your hands on the Mecgar 229-1 (9mm) mags and you get 15rds compared to the 13rds in the 228 mags. Don't get the newer 229 (9mm) mags, the top of the mag is too wide for your frame.

Here's the SigForum post by Sauer Puss that kind of started a lot of people on the 228 road... SigForum 228 Conversion

Here's the pict of the 229-1 mag:

My opinion on why people want a 228... its a nice compact gun for the Sig fan and there's not that many of them floating around. And people want to the older one for the internat extracor and roll-steel slide. That's why the M11 is not really selling as well as Sig hopes. The reason for all the talk of the 228 recent years is because of the cheap 228 parts kit hitting the market... the 229 (40/357) to 9mm conversion is being done all over and older 229 are everywhere with LEO trade-in programs.

I recently shot a a buddy's 228 conversion as mentioned in the Sig post. He had a short-reach trigger and the SRT kit on it, it was a sweet shooting Sig.

                Just my 2 cent.

If you have a two letter serial number on your 229 frame, then get any magazines that's listed as 229-1 mags. Sig mags if you can find them, MecGar is a good aftermarket brand for Sig mags since they are OEM manufacture for them.

                    Here are some examples:

                      Op,
If the 357 sig mags work, why get the 9mm? I did a slide conversion as well. 229/40 with a 228 slide kit. I just shoot the darn thing with my .40 mags. As long as i dont fill past 10, it shoots fine 100%. When I start sticking more 9's than 10, i get problems. I can fit 14 rounds of 9mm, in the 229/40 mag. I dont use the 228/9 for hd/sd only piinking and range time. She usually has the 40 kit, and hst's 180 grain. I feel safer with the 40 for hd than the 9.

So i guess, my question is what is the purpose of the slide change? If it is for Hd/Sd then i can see the need for the 9mm mags. I didnt want to mix up mags, thats why i stuck with the original 40 mags.
                      Just me.

If I can find someone local selling a 228 I'll probably buy that and forget about this conversion. However this is the only way to get a 15 rd p228 without switching to a longer mag.

since you have a west german 228 (I have one too) the answer should be obvious

it's not the "rare" part, or the "not being made anymore" part. quite simply, it's the finest compact 9mm ever made. period.
