Ammo purchase suggestions

Need to stock up and looking at SGammo they've got 1,000 rounds of Federal 230gr JHP HiShock for $419. And boxes of PDX1 20rd for $22.95 and HST 50rd for $32.95

AmmoSupplyWarehouse has Armscor US 230gr FMJ 1000rd for $309.99 and boxes of Sig 200gr JHP 20rd for $19.49.

It's for my 1911 Operator TRP and not sure if I should drop the extra $100 on the 1000 JHP just to have JHP for practice and then a few hundred of HST and PDX1 for SD. Or save the $100 get the FMJ and a couple boxes of the Sig JHP, HST, PDX1.

Shooting in the mountains, overpenetration not a concern for SD but maybe the bulk JHP is smart for if the hogs, coyotes or a bear runs up on me when I'm not loaded with HST or PDX1?

Or does anyone have any other suggestions on good ammo deals right now?

Nevermind, decided to get 250 rounds HST, 250 rounds Gold Dot, and 200 rounds PDX1 to see which one I like better.

When not at a range with a range master I always have a sidearm with SD JHP rounds and shoot what I brought to shoot with target rounds...so you are never left with an unloaded gun when the bear comes creapin'

Gonna shoot it all within a few weeks maybe a month or two and then from that decide which to buy a few thousand of.

HydraShok is a poor performing hp round, it does not have reliable expansion and is unpredictable. Sometimes it behaves as fmj, sometimes it does ok (not great), often under-penetrates, and then there's problem of jacket separation.


HST is currently the best and most consistent performing hp projectile, pdx1 is also decent. There are many reviews of both on youtube, go check them out, particularly tnoutdoors9 https://www.youtube.com/user/tnoutdoors9/videos

Also, buy a bunch of fmj to actually practice with. Beyond function testing 100+ rounds through a dirty gun, it just doesn't make sense to blast away good defense ammo. Admittedly, 0.41cpr isn't bad for the junk HydraShok and it's likely cleaner and more consistent, I'd still prefer paying low 0.30's for fmj, more bang for the buck.

I would recommend highly buying whatever is cheapest, even if it doesn't function perfectly...

but I am also honest enough to tell you that I am part of the sneaking bear clan.

I highly recommend SGammo. I have ordered from them several times and the prices are good and the packing is great. I had one order of 1000+ 45ACP and they had been clearly dropped in shipping. I expected a mess inside and since they double packed (box in box) all the manufacturer boxes were totally intact.

I'm also gonna grab 1k of the FMJ's cause yeah it's not very economical to blast away the good stuff just to do it.

I buy about 100 premium for every 1000 target ammo. I want to make sure that the premium stuff functions 100% but keep mostly for if the SHTF.
