    STI Edge

Hello all, I have a lot of different gun ideas going through my head. I was thinking of saving my cash to buy a Performance Center 627 but I'm now thinking of saving for a STI Edge in .40 cal.

The cost of the pistol itself is high but what really steers me away is the cost of magazines, especially since I like to have ten for each gun I own.

So with all that said, I don't even know what a Edge feels like in my hand. Is there anyone in San Diego or San Gabriel Valley that is willing to let me hold their Edge? I'm not asking to shoot it, just fondle it :-)

    Thanks,
    Steve

I have a few STI's including the Edge. (sorry, Norcal). Finicky things. First thing I had to do was throw in an Aftec extractor (all three). Many dump the Recoil Master.
If you think the cost of the factory mags is high (around 68 bucks), which can be fussy in their own right, look at the price of tuned mags.

Would I get them again? Dunno. I acquired the Edge, Eagle and Steel Master during my 2+ year SSE rampage when I kinda lost my sanity. But when they do run, they run mighty nice.

I'm assuming by your join date, post count and iTrader you are aware they are off roster but have the means to acquire one another way. Did you know Bar-Sto has a STI Edge .40 clone on roster?

Come to a USPSA match. A very large % of the people shooting in the Open and Limited divisions will be shooting STI 2011's.

Probably would have been cheaper to have the extractor tuned.

Great info fellas, thank you! If I get this thing it'll be for USPSA not bullseye. I'm very fond of Barsto but don't like the extra cost over a Brazos Customs gun that already is slightly tuned.

I see tuned magazines going for $130-150 which is ridiculous but I guess it's just like buying a Ferrari and asking what kind of mileage it gets, so if the heavy duty Wolff springs work I'll be very happy.

If I can't find anyone's Edge to fondle I'll contact Limited-10 in SD and ask to play with theirs.

An AFTEC extractor is good for shooters that don't know how to troubleshoot and fix a 1911 extractor. I run standard extractors in my raceguns and I only have to replace one out of my Open Division racegun back when power factor was 175 and I was shooting 38SC with 115 grain bullets. Keep in mind that you may need initial tuning when installing that AFTEC. If you have family out of state or exemption the price on the Edge is about regular retail.

The 2011 is a tuned competition gun that, like a car built for racing, is going to cost more to upkeep and keep working. But, once you get the gun working, they are an incredible amount of fun!

To get the most out of the guns you will want to reload so you can tune the ammo to the gun. Particularly loading your .40 to somewhere around 1.180" for best feeding.

As for mags, I use 4 SV mag tubes and guts (about $600 when i got them) and tuned the mags myself which is not hard if you have a decent vice and a good set of tools. I've never needed more than 4 mags for Limited Division.

Just a quick note, I had premature lock back problems regardless of bullet length and profile so I modified my slide stop to never lock back. If you're doing everything right in USPSA, you will NEVER have the slide to lock back anyway because you should ALWAYS reload before running the gun empty.

Second note, if you care about the finish not getting beat up, you will want to have an aftermarket coating on the STIs. Their stock bluing is very thin and wears fast in the holsters we use in USPSA. Your mags will get beat up, so you're going to have to live with that.

I saw many frustrated shooters throwing their mags down range. One got an unsportsmanlike conduct because he just lost his mind cursing at his expensive 170mm stick for at least 15 seconds before chucking it down range.

An AFTEC extractor is worth the money for a 9mm or 40 if you pull your extractor when you clean your gun. The pushing of the hook to clear the breach face always seems to tweak the tension. Its like the Dawson tool-less guide rod, you don't really need it, but its a very nice convenience to have it.

LOL! I wonder if you hit the popper and it doesn't go down, can you call for calibration?
