Px4 Guide Rod Spring & Cap **UPDATE** post #20

as luck would have it, when I did a field strip of my Px4 Storm last night, for some reason the cap at the end of the guide rod decided to fly out of its housing

after inspecting the cap, i noticed that the plastic "ears" of the cap, which hold it in place inside the guide rod had pretty much wore right off

now the cap won't stay in place, can't support the pressure of the spring, so whenever I insert the spring and bushing it just flies right off and won't hold...as luck would have it, nobody seems to have the replacement cap in stock...doing a bit of research online and this seems to be a common complaint among Px4 owners, the plastic cap doesn't seem to last very long

a gentlemen named Steve Bedair made a stainless guide rod he offered, but, I think health issues have sidelined his business...even finding the entire replacement guiderod, spring assembly is a task

anyone got any ideas or remedies i can look into?

I have a PX4 in 40 SW, how many rounds have you put through yours? You checked the usual sources such as Brownells, Numerich, Midway and Beretta?
I'd agree with you but then we'd both be wrong...

Brownells - out of stock, and, they show it as the 90-two end cap, hope it's interchangeable

Numerich - couldn't find it on their parts list

Midway - they don't seem to carry it

Beretta - referred me to Brownells lol

still searching, probably got about 1000 rounds through it

Did you try calling Beretta? They'll probably replace it for free.

OMG! Poor fella, this is the quote from his web site:

Over the past nine years I have had the pleasure of doing what I enjoy by serving the best of customers. Thank you all for your support and loyalty throughout the years. At Thanksgiving this year, I was diagnosed with Stage 4 Lung Cancer. The cancer has grown and metastasized over the last couple of years, and I had no idea. The cancer is all over my body. I have 5 tumors in my left lung. One of those moved to my spine. I have 10-15 tumors in my brain, and it is also in my Lymph Nodes. The diagnosis with treatment was 6 months and without treatment about 6 weeks. I received 8 radiation treatments, but I have decided to choose quality of life over the quantity of time left. I was in a Hospice facility for a week so that they could regulate my pain medication. I am home now with Hospice helping us through whatever time is left.

This has all happened so quickly to our family. We have two daughters ages 20 and 9. We are all trying to adjust to what is to come. We have tremendous family and friends who are supporting us throughout this difficult time. We thank everyone for their love, prayers, and support. We have a strong faith in God, and we are leaning on Him knowing that his greater Plan is in motion.

I want to thank you again for making the last nine years so successful and please keep our family in your prayers.
          Sincerely,
          Steve Bedair
So sad to hear this, wishing him all the best.

BTW Teddy, how old is your Beretta PX4? With a round count of only 1000, could it be still under warranty? If so, you might be able to just send it in and have Beretta fix it for you?

It is disappointing to hear Beretta refer you somewhere else for parts.

I just took a look at mine and both guide rod caps look OK. Yours failed at the small end that goes into the block, right? I bought mine in 2011 and have over 3K rounds through it.
I'd agree with you but then we'd both be wrong...

actually mine failed at the top of the rod, not the part that rests in the block...there's a plastic cap there that pushes in and has 2 plastic prongs that hold it in the rod...those prongs wore out and now the pressure from the spring just pushes it right out

i just found a guy in Texas making a stainless steel rod for the full size Px4...he uses a hex/allen nut at the top to hold in the spring, which seems much more long lasting...i went ahead and ordered one from him

a couple of the pics he sent me...like $47.00, that's just one day of no hookers or blow, a good deal

i bought mine just a few months before you bought yours, bear, i remember you telling me about getting it after seeing mine

that part did fail way too early IMHO, but, i've read some complaints online from other people who seemed to have the same issue...it's a very small plastic piece of mold, and, im guessing if one is molded without enough plastic in that area it won't last long, so, while some are getting a strong molded cap, a few of us might not

anyway i think i found the remedy

sure, this guy is out of Texas, what started as making some custom stuff for his own firearms kind of turned into a business

                      he's on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/firearmmods?fref=ts

                      his website www.firearmmods.com

there is Contact info, including a phone number on the website

so far, i think he only makes it for the full size Px4, i figured for $47.00 i would give it a try

im sorry, that's not exactly what happened Brass, i don't want to give you a false impression...their WEBSITE directed me to the Brownell's site for parts, i haven't actually spoken to anyone in Customer Service at Beretta yet...closed until Monday

i will give them a call and see what they can do, they've always been more than accommodating in past dealings

Teddy, thanks for the clarification. Let us know what they say as I think I'd like to add one to my spare parts stash.

I saw an ad from Beretta that shows the 92 FS with a green laser built into the spring guide rod. That would be a nice addition to both the 92 and PX4. I wonder if they sell retrofit kit guide rods?
I'd agree with you but then we'd both be wrong...

Bummer to hear about your guide rod.

That's the problem with Beretta- just not easy to get parts, compared to something like Glock where there are any number of vendors where you can buy stock or aftermarket parts.

I may order one of those steel guide rods to have as a backup for my PX4.

I did get a steel fluted guide rod for my 92G-SD from Wilson Combat. I wonder if we can get enough people to email them to convince them to start making "upgrade" parts for the PX4 as well as the 92 series pistols.
