DW Valor vs. upper end 1911

I would really like to get a Dan Wesson Valor, or even VBOB.. but I know, I'm late to the party and missed SSE'ing one. I haven't seen one FS lately in SoCal either. For the price that I'd end up paying for one now, I'm close to the price of an Ed Brown, or something along those lines.

Would that be a better buy, instead of just paying the CA premium for getting an off-roster Valor?

If not, I know the TRP is in the same range as a DW Valor (original price). Any other recommendations that are as close to the valor as possible?

I am in the same boat as you, wishing I jumped on the Valor when SSE was still around. The TRP is probably close, but I think the Valor occupied a unique space of being closer to the $3k Nighthawk, Wilson, Ed Brown range than the TRP.

The Valor is better then the TRP but the CA price for a Valor could get you a Les Baer so I would go Bear.

I love my duty coated valor. I think if you can get one for $2k or so that would be a fair price. Baer is also a nice choice but don't care much for the rough finishing on those. If I had a choice between a Baer TRS and duty coated Valor, price being the same I would choose the Valor. However, I have seen some Browns in the classifieds lately for around $2,200. That might also be an option for you as well.

As far as Wilson's go... If that extra $1k doesn't bother you they are very fine guns. Love my cqb and feel it was worth every penny.

I know for sure OnTarget range in Laguna Niguel is an authorized dealer for Wilson. I've seen a few at other shops in the north OC area but I only remember Field Time Sports having them for sure... and unfortunately they're closed now.

In my experience with Valors, Vbobs, and Heritages - I think the Heritage is great and would not rule one out over a Valor. The Vbob and Valor are great too at $1600 or so, and I'd pick either over a TRP, but that's b/c both are set up closer to what I want vs the TRP. However, as good as the valor and vbob are, if they really are going for $2k and used Browns or semi customs are too, I'd probably get a used semi-custom or save up for a new semi-custom.

Aside from DW, the other guns I'd really like in the ~$1500 range would be STI.

I like Dan Wesson guns because they don't have MIM parts. The CBOB is a great value at $1,100 but I think the Valor is priced too high. For $2,000 I'd choose a semi-custom Les Baer over a production line gun.

I've been feeling the same way.. been wanting to settle on something around 1k.. but I will probably keep on thinking about what else I should have bought. Would probably end up spending more this way.

Where do you see a cbob for 1100? They're listed more around 1500-1600.

The MSRP is a little over $1,100 on CZ's site: http://cz-usa.com/press-release/dan-...assic-bobtail/

A few years ago, I found one on sale for $1,100 when I was at the Bay Area Gun Vault: http://www.yelp.com/biz/bay-area-gun...-mountain-view

Maybe you can get the break top single shot upper from a vendor here, Limited-Ten, then send it to DW to put on a Valor frame. You can buy the Valor slide from DW.

I checked out the Dan Wesson 1911s at Shot Show (not this past year but the year before...didn't get to their booth this year for some reason). I liked them. They had great triggers and great fit and finish.

That said, the most impressive High End 1911s I've see are those made by Ed Brown. Not only do they make an excellent product, the family owned and operated business offers friendly customer service. They are really nice people.

The ones I was not so crazy about were the Les Baers. Not only did I not like the triggers or fit and finish as much as others, the staff were grouchy and rude. I would still buy one used if I found a hell of a deal on one. But I would not go out of my way searching for one. A smoking deal would have to fall into my lap.
