high velocity .45acp

I saw a segment on one of those gun TV shows, guns and ammo/gun talk etc. that had new 45acp rounds that had thicker wall so they could load it to much higher pressures. The bullets were standard 230gr I believe, so I know it wasn't a light bullet. Does anyone know what I'm talking about?

You can cut down a .308 case and make it a .451 detonics, basically. With a different chamber as .45 is a rebated rim and headspaces. .308 cut to the length of a .45acp is a .45 super, 1300 fps or so. My dad did this for a while in the late eighties with a six-inch "pin gun" he built, but it was just a fun diversion for him.

451 Detonics' case is longer than the 45ACP, but both have same COAL. A 45 Super is the same dimension as the 45ACP but loaded to higher pressures. A quality 45ACP pistol that has fully supported chambers and can be equipped with a heavier recoil like +8 lbs should be able to sustain 45Super ammo. The only problem with that is mixing it up with your regular 45ACP pistols can spell disaster.

Hmm might need to try this in my blackhawk convertable .45 acp cylinder. Using .308 brass I won't need to worry about it getting mixed in with my regular .45 acp for my 1911

I don't think that's it.this was factory loaded and they said any 45acp would handle the pressures. The pressure is contained by the thicker case walls. I think the name was .450acp or something along those lines

In the later part of 2000, Triton announced a new cartridge based on the .45 ACP case head. The .450 SMC is basically a .45 Super with a small primer pocket. A smaller primer pocket means more brass in the web area, but I am not sure if the added strength is really needed here. There may also be some ballistic advantages, and small rifle primers are not as prone to primer flow in these cartridges. But I suspect one reason for the small primer is to make the round visibly different from the .45 Super.

Of course, Triton could have just marketed the .45 Super under a different name, as Garey Hindman has no lock on the design itself, only the .45 Super name. Still, having a visibly different case more clearly separates the .450 SMC from the .45 Super.

External dimensions of the .450 SMC are the same as the .45 Super and .45 ACP. Factory ballistics are quoted by Triton to be slightly higher than the .45 Super.

Triton has just changed owners and reportedly is still committed to the .450 SMC concept. It is an interesting variation on the .45 Super, and we will just have to wait and see if the cartridge makes it in the marketplace.

.460 Rowland? It's longer brass, and you need a barrel and heavier spring. Very popular to do on glocks and 1911's

Pretty sure you saw a segment on Liberty Civil Defense ammo. Super hot velocity, but not 230 gr stuff. Believe testing showed 2100fps. They make it for 9mm and 380 also with corresponding high fps.

There seems to be some misunderstanding about what is going on with this ammo (if the LCD ammo was what is being discussed). It is a .45 ACP +P load, using a +P 45 Auto case which does have a stronger webbing than a normal .45 Auto case. It merely is strong enough to be loaded to 45ACP +P pressures, roughly 10% higher than normal 45 ACP. The pressures involved are the same as any other 45 Auto +P load.

The reason the velocity is so high is the bullet is 78 grains, versus normal 185-230gr. The bullet basically explodes at impact with the main body of penetration being like 3" deep. In the tests I have seen, the only part that penetrates to a normal depth is the remaining base of the bullet.

It is a very light bullet, loaded to +P 45 ACP pressures, hence going very fast when it hits and fragments. There is nothing special about this ammo other than the novelty of using a very light, very large hollow point projectile.
