Beretta 92fs Vs. M9

The New 92FS does differ slightly from the M9. Back in the 90s the two were identical except for markings and sights.
The modern (post 2000 or so) 92FS has a slanted dust cover (the lower part of the slide that extends out in front of the trigger guard) and an improved back strap with more material removed to fit smaller hands better. The dust cover was a carry over from modifications made to the 96 (.40 Cal) and the back strap was an improvement initially given to the 92 Elite pistols in the late 1990s. Additionally there has been an increasing amount of polymer parts on both pistols since 2000, including recoil spring guides, triggers, and de-cockers. The M-9's rear sight is a "half circle" dot below the notch while the 92FS has a traditional "3-dot" sight (although the 92 was available with M-9 style sights back in the 90s).
In addition to this, there is a M9A1 which is basically an M-9 but includes modified front strap checkering, improved radius back strap, and a front rail dust cover.sigpic -

I thought I read somewhere that they have different finishes, is that true?Comment

Not that I have seen although I have heard this before as well. I first was issued the M9 in 1995 and I purchased my first 92FS that same year as well (present for my commishioning). All of the M9s I have seen as well as all the 92FS have the same Brunton finish on them. Brunton is basically a phosphate/parkerized finish which then has a heat baked polymer enamel coating applied. As far as I know, the Brunton finish was Mil Spec for the M9 production so all M9s should have it (I have fired some M9s that have much of their finish worn off, but they were at one time Brunton finished). Many of the earlier 92 series pistols do have different finishes and the some early 92F pistols were adopted into military service (those were the ones the Seals got that had the slide separations) and it is quite possible they had different finishes leading to these rumors.
I have also heard that M9s have chromed barrels and 92FSs do not, however all of the 92FSs I have seen have chrome lined barrels. The possible exception to this is the 92FS Inox (Stainless Steel) as I have a 92G Elite with a stainless barrel and it is not chrome lined, but then again, the Elite is a different animal. There is quite a bit of information concerning this matter on AR15.com in the Handguns forum. That said, some of the information posted there is contrary to my experience. Good video and pretty much sums it up. One small note is that the M9 in the movie is a "civilian" M9 (made for civilian sales) as military M9s do not have the M9-XXXX serial numbers.sigpicComment
