It's a mid-size gun - I ccw one most of my career, but now prefer other smaller and lighter options. However, occasionally I still carry mine for sentimental reasons.

I carried my .40 s&w P229 around the house for a few hours to see what it would feel like (I was using a Comptac MTAC holster and a Wilderness belt. ). There's no way I would choose it as my EDC. That thing is a heavy beast with a lot of girth in the slide. I would rather ccw a Government 1911.

^ What they said. It can be done, but they are heavy. Good holster and a very good reinforced belt can help.

Great gun for winter carry in colder areas. Not so much in socal in summer. Like others said, it can be done, just not very comfortably. For warmer weather something smaller would be better.

If you really like SIG a p232, p239, or p250 compact would probably be better choices. I believe there are versions of all 3 of those still on the roster. If you want something different a Smith and Wesson shield, used glock 42, or a used Ruger lc9 would also work well for all around carry. The Glock and Ruger are off roster so doing a ppt is usually the easiest way to get one.

How big are you?

I don't live in a CCW county but if I did, the 229 would be too bulky for my frame.

I'm 5'8 165lb. I suppose if I wore super baggy clothes maybe, but even then it I would feel the bulk and weight on my side, and would not be happy.

I'm 6' 220 and with a good belt (The Beltman) and quality holster (Milt Sparks VMII IWB) I can carry my P229 .40 comfortably. That being said, I'm experimenting with OWB holsters for it right now. Think I can do OWB in winter with heavier shirts and jackets, not sure about summer though. I'll keep ya posted.

I'm a huge SIG fan myself. The 229 is just too thick for me to conceal well. I have a 224 (just a chopped down 229) & I can only carry it when I'm wearing a sweatshirt or cover garment. A 239 is easier to conceal. I'm going even smaller & lighter. I'm about to pickup a 290RS to carry while wearing only a t-shirt & a 250 Compact for winter carry

I carry mine when I do CCW. Usually in a fobus paddle holster with a larger shirt over it. Trying to dial in an iwb holster, but I need to get some slightly larger pants in order to make it more comfortable. I won't argue that it is a little bit on the thick and heavy side, but I'm used to it. I would also agree, that thinner would be better. But, if it's all that you have and can get a CCW then do it and add another gun later.

I carry a 220 and its comfortable, im 6' 180lbs. It's amazing what a good belt/holster combo can do for you. But simply answered, yes, it's a great CCW option.
