    Just fired my first p220

wow. I handn't shot a handgun since I was a kid plinking .22s. Recently purchased a Sig 220 and had an absolute blast at LAX. Didn't realize how amazingly violent, loud, fierce and apparently deadly (and intimidating) the .45 caliber is. Love it! Although I need lots more practice, was able to get in a few head shots at 20 feet. That gun is way more accurate than me. Question: evidently the Sig sights are set at 25 yds. So shooting at, say 10 or 15 or 20 should you adjust down or up on target? I noticed many of my shots were below target. Are there any hard and fast rules re shooting at different distances with factory sights? Thanks and I'll see ya at the range!

Btw - I shot Winchester white 230, Pmc fmj 230, golden saber 185, and hydrashok 230 - which was by far my favorite of the bunch. Easiest to shoot and (most expensive) the Federal was most accurate for me - which I thought was weird since I figured ammo was ammo. I was hoping I'd like the golden saber jhp since it was a bit cheaper. But no.
Also Couldn't tell much difference in the kick between the 185 and the 230.

I'd spend sometime researching the terminal ballistics of each bullet/round (the JHP's) before settling on one just based on how accurate is was for you.
edit: Youtube is a good source for ballistics tests, I like tnoutdoors9. Not all bullets are created equal.
Afterwards run the contestants through your handgun for reliability testing.

At 20ft all should be just as accurate, at 20-25 yards or so is where you'll start seeing serious deviations, if you-yourself are even capable of being that accurate (it's the indian not the arrow)..

It's poor technique and shooter error accounting for the inaccuracy, sounds like you just need some training and a lot of practice (as all of us did at first, and continue to)..

aside from that, congrats on the purchase! P220's are great handguns

SIGs are set up for a combat sight picture so they'll shoot low if you are used to a 6 o'clock hold. You can buy different sight sets if you like.

Congrats on your purchase. If your rounds are hitting below the target, it may be because you're using the incorrect sight alignment. Every Sig that I shot required #3 in order to hit the target.

Order an SRT kit (short reset trigger) for it, you will love the difference.

+1 to what Teflondog said. SIGs have combat sights. You want the dot on the front sight to cover where you're shooting. If the 10 ring is above that front sight, you'll shoot low. P220s are the best out of the box .45 money can buy. Congrats!

Teflondog I will try sight image 3. I was using #1. Thanks for the advice. I know I need training and practice but t did feel like I was aiming too low. I will get smoother one of these days. 😃

Curious What the SRT does for you? Also, since the DA is pretty darn stiff, is it kosher to just cock the trigger on the first round and make all the pulls SA? I like the DA/SA setup as I hate messing with the safety but that first pull takes some getting used to.

I shoot my P226, P229 & P220 from 7yd.-15yd. with #3 sight image and don't have to adjust the height. I'm not aware of deviation height maybe because of focusing on consistency rather than bullseye. I'll check the POA & POI next trip to the range.

Regarding DA, I do it at least twice when at range and the rest are SA. The only time you use DA is when you decock it. Otherwise, it's always SA after racking the slide.

Can you guys tell me what the SRT does for you? Also, that DA trigger takes some getting used to. I was wondering if it's kosher to simply cock the trigger on the first round to make all the pulls SA? I like the DA/SA setup as I don't want to mess with a safety- but that first pull is sure stiff.

I know nothing about the SRT, but I do know that the DA trigger will become better with age. As far as cocking the hammer, if you're at the range, it shouldn't be an issue, if in an self defense situation it wouldn't be advised as it takes time.

Besides, if the slide is locked backed, when you insert the mag and release the slide the hammer should stay in cocked position. Same when you rack the slide with a magazine in place.

                              220 is an awesome gun.
                              Sorry, not sorry.
