    Check Sight Zero

So I took my HK45 to a LGS to have Heinie Straight 8's installed. Picked it up today and was told that they did not zero the sights at all, as they did not have the equipment for it apparently. So how do I check the zero myself? I don't have access to a ransom rest, and everything I see online either says "use a bore laser" or "bore lasers suck". Any advice guys?

I'm sure some will say shoot it, I use calipers to measure the distance between the center of the rear and front sights to the center of the slide

On one of my CZ's the rear sights drift after maybe a few thousand rounds. It is an infamous issue with a CZ comp rear sight that only has one screw notch. I use laserlyte's bore sight and it works perfectly for zeroing at home.

I've never tried zeroing sights by shooting, am I wrong that I don't trust my skill level of be sufficient to get consistent results? It's not like all my shots are dead on when I'm shooting with factory zero'ed sights...

I think I have calipers lying around at work, I'll give that a shot.

When i am unsure of my sight adjustment, i put the but of the gun on a bench and pull the trigger real slowly. Its worked so far. You could also use a sand bag.

It's a handgun, not a 0.5moa rifle. Shoot 10 rds into an 8 inch target at 25yds, and call it a day. Bring polymer head hammer for fine tuning if the rear sight is fixed type.

Just shoot it, once you are grouping well with it, then drift the rear sight until you hit the center. It doesn't matter if it is zeroed on a ransom rest, it only matter is it hits the target when YOU are shooting it. Your guns should be accurate in your hands.

Hmm, my caliper set eludes me so I guess I'm heading to the range tonight.

Calipers are only going to get you to mechanical zero. That doesnt mean the pistol will shoot COM at that point.

Have someone shoot it for you that is competent to do so.
