Some type of pepperbox pistol. Hard to say specifically from that angle as most pepper boxes look pretty close to each other (and being a Hollywood gun means there is no guarantee it is a real gun - or even a good replica).

Oh, and the fact that I don't know much about the different manufacturers of such guns throughout the years.

Looks to be a Charles Lancaster of London pepperbox pistol, or a copy.

It's hard to tell from you pic, but it might have a trigger not a ring. Emit might be one of these.

OP: It's a pepperbox, but not one of the ones pictured - it has a trigger and guard. Could be an Allen & Thurber, Stocking & Co., N. Flayderman & Co., or something else. Most of the pepperboxes I am aware of are English makes, and use percussion caps.

It predates the Judge by a long time. I also found it to have less recoil and be quite pleasant to shoot. It also came chambered in a 45-70 cartridge, so it was the hand cannon of it's day.
