Ruger MK III

Im really looking into purchasing a Ruger MK III handgun. I love the way it looks and feels. Ive heard of all the horror stories about the difficulty of field stripping the handgun, but that is not my concern. I went to the local range today to try it out. They had the 22/45 model, which I do not want. I want the Mark III bull barrel. Before renting the handgun out, the instructors warned me about the reliability of the hangun. They told me how it constantly jams (stove pipes). I own a sig mosquito and had some problems with it, untill I switched to cci. Now it functions perfectly. They informed me, that even with the stingers, this handgun still has problems. I tried it out for my self. I had about 10 stove fte and ftf out of 100 rounds. I was using stingers. Is this common? Is there something with that particular gun? Is it the luck of the draw? Where I may buy a lemon or a nice reliable .22? Any inputs? Also, I know they arent on the roster, but is there any way of aquiring pac-lite and or volquartsen uppers/ barrels?

That range probably doesn't clean their guns often. The Ruger Mark III is a fine weapon. It's just a Californicated Mark II, really.

The field stripping does kind of suck, but it also makes cleaning more fun

But back to reliability, there is nothing wrong with them. They are extremely reliable pistols. I have a Mark II Government Competition model (Slab-sided bull barrel), and it's flawless.

Right, that what they said though. They told me the Mark II are actually more reliable than the Mark III. Is there any truth in there?

The MKIII hunter is my favorite of all the MKIII series. They are reliable and a great rimfire target pistol.

And how about the pac-lite and or volquartsen uppers/barrels. We can't get them here in Kali, can we?

The volquartsen barrel/ all the cool upgrades on the volquartsen site should be able to be purchased since they are parts just like buying barrels/stocks for a 10/22. I havent seen a lot of those because most people buy a MKIII for a decent priced target gun and dont want to drop all the extra coin into one. If you have the money i would do it. Volquartsen is good quality stuff!

Since the barrel is one piece with the receiver, and the receiver needs to be DROSed, I dont think you can purchase these parts in Kali

I think the 22/45 is good if you want a polymer gun that has firing controls in the same positions as a regular 1911. If u want a target runner go witht he Mark III target or Hunter. Cleaning wise, it will be about the same.

I agree with the poster above. Range probably didn't take care of it. I just bought a MarkIII standard 4" tapered barrel, just waiting to DROS it today.

I have an MKIII 22/45 with thousands of rounds through it. The only time I have problems is when the magazines get really dirty.

Stainless all the way! I'm not a big fan of the 22/45's. They use a plastic lower.

As far as the Volquartsen stuff, like the other posters have said with the Ruger Mark series pistols, the "upper" is the serialized firearm part. Since the volquartsen ones would have to be drop tested/etc/etc/etc, you aren't going to get one in CA.

As to the Mark III reliability vs Mark II, I don't see why they would be any different. The loaded chamber indicator MIGHT get in the way and slow things down and make the gun less reliable if it's really dirty, but I don't see that happening.

I have a Ruger Mk III 22/45 Stainless with a 5.5" Bull barrel.
It shoots fine and never had a mis-fire with CCI Blazer .22's, and
Wally World Federal Bulk packs.
I did have a few duds from Remington Bulk packs that someone
at the range gave me to fire.

I always clean my Pistols after a evening at the range.
As long as you maintain your pistol you should not have problems.
