M&P 9 upgraded recoil spring question?

Hello CG,

I had some work done to my M&P slide which was done by Kcstott. The slide should be arriving in the mail today and I am excited! The work looks great and I would recommend KC highly. Any ways I had KC add some window cut outs to each side of the Slide as well as one on top.

My question is since I reduced the weight of the slide, and I am sure I reduced a good amount, would I need to upgrade the recoil spring to a heavier weight so I don't stress the gun out to much. If so how much? Any info or links would be greatly appreciated.

I think you're looking at it from the wrong POV.

I could be wrong (it's happened before), but I think a heavier spring will batter your slide as it returns into battery

This is from Chris Costa and what he has done to his M&P as far as slide work and recoil spring.

"Slabbed Side Cuts

The stock M&P recoil spring is 16 lbs. I believe. So I was assuming since he is running a 20-22 lb. spring and has similar slide work done than........ catch my drift

Sounds right to me. Less mass moving forwards, less spring tension required to move it.

And dang! that's some big cutouts. Curious to see how it works over time.

I could be wrong but I believe the stock recoils spring weight is actually 20lbs. I have top slide cutouts and I run a 15lb recoil spring from speed shooters specialties with a tungsten guide rod.

I do not know if you need a lighter or heavier spring with a lighter slide.

A lighter slide has less mass (duh), so it has less momentum, and there for offers less resistance to the force of the cartridge trying to push it backwards. That means it will open up sooner than if the slide was heavier. If it opens up too soon, the pressure in the barrel may still be too high, and cause a lot of blowback in your face.

So you spend money to remove weight from the front of the slide to make it lighter so the gun can be pointed faster. Then you spend more money on a tungsten guide rod to put the weight back on the front of the gun.

What does KC say to do with the spring? Since he modifies the slide why don't you ask him for a recommendation?
