Has anyone ever seen this on Ammo?

I was givin this box of .38 Special. when I opened the box and pulled a round out I found what looks like oxidation on the bullet. Is normal for older ammo and can they still be shot?

I don't want to use these if that oxidation is going to ruin my Barrel.

If I posted this in the wrong place, please say so and I'll move the thread.

Wipe it off or don't shoot it.

It doesn't just wipe off...looks like I might have to get rid of the box.

Just lube it and shoot it, it'll be fine. Happens quite often. If you are that worried someone will gladly take it off your hands

I'd shoot it unless I had a few that sounded weird.

Shoot it.
Or wear a dust mask and clean it up with steel wool if it bothers you.
All lead non-plated bullets will oxidize in time.
Or give it to me.

If you are going to scrub it, do it outside with a dust mask as Ontmark says.
Wet the steel wool to minimize particles.
Clean it over paper towels and discard.

It will shoot fine. Last year I shot a 50 year old box of .38 that all the rounds looked like yours. No problem.

I have two boxes of bullets (not loaded ammo, bullets) that I bought 15 yeas ago and never got around to loading up. All lead, none looks like that. But they were stored pretty dry.

I have no idea how these were stored. They were given to me in this condition.

The box they come in is "Peters" and the price sticker on them is $11.00. So that should tell you their age...lol

Typical on old ammo. Take some fine steel wool to it if you don't like how it looks. Later lead ammo has like a wax on it to prevent the oxidation.
