    Sig P220 magazine question

Hey everybody, so recently I saw a video on YouTube where a guy had a Smith and Wesson M&P shield in 9mm and didn't like the 7 rounds capacity, buying the extended mags didn't exactly solve the issue since they tend to protrude from the grip. So he had an epiphany I guess and got in touch with his inner MacGyver, and simply cut some section of his spring in the mags, after cutting about 5 links away, he was able to fit 9 rounds i believe and had follow up videos where he said it's been reliable thus far.

My question is can it be done with a 220 mag? Would totally love to squeeze maybe 1 or two more rounds in the mag. I don't mind the 8 rounds but 10 has always been a good number to me lol I already have a 10 rounds extended mag and it just ruins the look in my opinion. Thanks in advance for any replies/ knowledge given

How are you going to use the mag? Range, HD, EDC? I would try cutting the spring only if questionable reliability is not a problem. And I do not think there is room for 10 rounds in 8 round magazine, regardless of how much you cut the sping off.
I have P220 with 10 round magazine for HD. The look does not matter, I want the BANG when I need it.

My pro-mag 10 rounder is strictly range use only. My 10 round Sig magazine is home defense as well, if this mod is possible I'd only use them for range use, since cutting spring links would decrease spring pressure and make it more prone to malfunction

Try it without the spring first, if the rounds fit then cut the spring.

Why not just find yourself a 227? They come with 10-round flush fit mags stock. I had a 220, sold it & bought a 227 last year because I wanted 10 +1 capacity. I prefer the double stack grip to the single stack of the 220 as well. 227s are fantastic, basically a double stack 220, or a 226 chambered in .45

It is clear you get the message, so I hope this doesn't come across as preachy, but ... do all of us a favor, put tape on the magazine that says "for range use only" or spray paint it pink. This can end badly in a real-world self-defense situation.

The number one attribute of a HD-use gun is that it goes "bang" when you pull the trigger. Everything else is a race for second place.

i suggest you not Bubba the mags. if the 8 rounders don't do it for you and the 10 rounders don't look cool, you'd most likely be best off to find a handgun that better accommodates you.

thanks for the feedback everyone, I would totally love a 227 but I love my 220 as well. One day but for now I AM satisfied with my handgun. I grew up shooting 1911's so the 8 rounder, as I've stated, is 100% ok with me. The 10 rounders mag look ugly in MY opinion, but that doesn't mean I won't use it. this question is just a "what if" scenario if anything. If someone can point me in the direction of a 227 in the Ventura/ Oxnard area, that'd be cool because as far as I'm aware they are officially off the list or at least a pain in the butt to get a hold of, my town and surrounding area don't have as many gun shops as I'd like. bunch of small independent ones but nothing like bass pro shops, academy, or cabelas

A couple of things come to mind:

                  1. even if you remove the spring completely, I don't think you can get 10 rounds of ..45 ACP into a 8 round 220 tube.

                  2. What might work, for a while, with a stack of 9mm cartridges, has completely different dynamics from what might work with a stack of .45ACP cartridges...that is why there is so much more upward pressure in the 220 mag than in a Shield mag or a 225 mag.

However, I'll add that anyone who has a reliable 220 Pro-Mag, might be a favored child of the Magazine Gods

Just disassembled 8 round magazine. 10 rounds barely fit in the 8 round magazine body. Base plate has to be forced in order to go back on. 0 room for the spring.

I would imagine that would work if the magazine is new on the shield.
However, once the magazine gets old and used, I would care to wager that it will fire 4-5 rounds before running out of juice to push up the rest.

I can not imagine how it will work when there in no room for the spring once you put 10 rounds.
