I don't think any one gun can be called the best one ever made, there have been countless awesome handguns produced over the years, so to say there is one that stands head and shoulders above the rest is futile at best. I knew as soon as I saw the title of this thread everyone would claim the gun they own is the best.sigpicComment

A good quality mid-sized double action .357 magnum revolver like the Ruger GP 100 or the Smith 686.
The knock-down/lethality power is at the top of the food chain, ammunition is widely available and relatively affordable, you can tailor-suit the power load to adjust to the level of expertise of the user, can be used for hunting and taking down deer sized game.
When needed, in case the gun needs to be serviced and taken down for fixing, cleaning, or maintenance, the process is relatively easy. Most gunsmith would be able to fix it and parts would be ease to come by.
The affordability factor on both mentioned guns are also relatively high. In my opinion, you don't have to sell an arm and a leg to get the BEST, when taken in those context.
Now, as to bragging-rights of what one owns.................that is a whole different matter.Comment

While I think we need a less ambiguous definition of "Best", I'll propose the HK P7 as one of the finest masterpieces of a handgun ever conceived. While they run hot, and look like a clock inside, they sure are easy on the eyes.
