    1911 question...

I have an SA 1911 Stainless Loaded 9mm in DROS. I'd like to replace the guide rod to a conventional/GI rod and plug (and get a spare recoil spring). Would the rod and plug be identical for the same pistol in a 45ACP?

I'm looking at http://shopwilsoncombat.com/1911-Acc...epartments/13/ and they don't differential between a 9mm and 45ACP regarding rods and plugs. I thought the rod and plug for a 9mm would be smaller then for a 45ACP (due to the recoil spring).

FWIW, below is what I was about to order but thought first I'd ask for advice (I'm not sure which recoil spring to order).

Wilson Combat has been the innovator in custom pistols, long guns, and accessories since 1977. Home of the Wilson Combat 1911, EDC X9, WCP320, and more!

    Thanks

The recoil spring plug and guide rod do not know the difference between 9mm and 45 ACP, but the spring itself will.

As long as you order the right size - Gov't model, you're good to go.

    Congrats on your S/A Loaded.

        Thanks for the feedback.

One more thing....Should I replace the original with a full length guide rod or will a shorty be OK?

The pistol comes with the spring attached to half of the guide rod. I would prefer a full length guide rod, new recoil spring and new plug. But if a full length guide rod wouldn't work (I can't imagine why but I'm putting it out there), would a shorty do?

I'm thinking aloud wondering if there was a specific engineering reason why Springfield decided on a 2 piece set-up and not conventional like other 1911s. I would think their 2 piece guide rod would be more costly to produce (and a pain if dis-assembly is required in the field). I'm fairly new to the 1911 platform so I'm learning as I go.

I have both the SA Loaded and Range Officer in the 9mm. Replaced both OEM guide rods with a Wilson Combat full length guide rod. If you like the guide rod look, I recommend doing the same.
