Go to a range with lots of rentals and try everything you can.
Make sure you go to a range that charges one fee for all guns rented.
Some ranges charge per gun rented and that gets expensive.
Don't buy for the name or just Internet research, buy because you like to shoot it.

Also the G17 over a PX4; the Glock is easier to customize to your liking.

Telling a new shooter to get a .22 these days is a cruel joke.
OP In normal times I would agree 100% about the .22 but there is a bizarre shortage of that ammo these days and the stuff that is available is ridiculously priced.
I say go with the G-19
it is very handy, very reliable and decently accurate. and ammo is available at reasonable prices.

so you are turning 21 and want to buy a hand gun...and don't know what kind.if you can wait a while , go out to the TURNERS gun fair at REEHAUGES in corona i think it is around MAY OR JUNE ..if not aand you have friends that have handguns ask to tag along and see what they have ..but offer to buy ammo for the use. once you turn 21 you can always rent guns at your local gun range and try all the guns u want.

Targetmasters in Milpitas has a a Wednesday rental deal. The first 2 rental guns are $5 each and after that they are free. I first purchased a .22lr which I feel really helped me with my fundamentals. I now also shoot 9mm but I refurrn to the .22 when I want to shoot a higher.volume. .22 is just a lot of fun.

Welcome to CalGuns OP! My friend swears by his PX4 as it fits very well in his hands. Also, try out Baretta 92, XD, Sig 2022, CZ75b, those are roughly within your price range.
