    Very Basic Question on Grips

My wife and I would like a 45 Colt revolver. She likes the big holes. I am fine with that, but all seem to have a western style grip, which I do not care for. I like the more conventional grip like the Hogue seen on a Ruger GP 160 357Mag. I am not sure what that style is called. I was not sure the Western style gun could take a grip like the Hogue seen on the 357 Mag GP100 Ruger. I think the frames are different? Also, which grip style is easier to shoot as far as recoil goes? This is just for paper target shooting.

Any recommendations on a good 45 Colt revolver that does not cost an arm and leg is certainly welcomed.

    Thank you.

    Phil

Get yourself a Ruger Blackhawk and put Hogue grips on it. http://www.midwayusa.com/product/781...x-rubber-black The single action purists will hate you, but it will make the recoil much more tolerable. And if you get the Blackhawk convertible, you can shoot (much cheaper) .45 ACP. The Hogues on my GP100 may be ugly, but they help make shooting full power .357 a breeze.

If I remember correctly, you can shoot 45LC out of anything chambered in 454 casull or 460 s&w. They will also shoot 45 schofield.

Yeah, you can shoot .45LC out of a .454 or .460, I would go that route if you don't like the boot grip on a typical single action.

All this, but does she want a DA or "cowboy" style?

If she like the 'big holes' don't forget 44 special such as Charter Arms Bulldog. Worked for Son Of Sam.

I think the Hogues on (blued) GP100 look great and give it an "all business" vibe.

Ruger also makes DA Redhawk in Colt 45. CA approved. http://www.ruger.com/products/redhaw...eets/5027.html

I've tried wrapping strips of old bike inner-tubes, leather, paracord, fabric around grips and it all seems to work very well to change up the grip feel.

As far as which grip style is easier to shoot, I've always found that grips on single action revolvers was very easy to shoot. It point's naturally and is designed to roll in your hand with the recoil. Rubber grips do absorb some recoil although I don't really notice a difference some people say they do. For a not too pricey quality .45 long colt, your choice is pretty much Ruger. The S&W if you can find one is not going to be inexpensive. Beyond those two I can't think of anything else in .45 that isn't a cowboy type gun, that I would recommend. Hogue does make rubber grips for the single action Ruger's. I've never tried one on a single action revolver though.
