M&P 22 Consistant Failure to extract Federal Bulk 40 Grain

I finally got my hands on an M&P 22 from one of the other Calguns members here. It was presented as having been fired less than 200 rounds.

The gun was a little dirty but otherwise appears to be in good order. I took it to the range but it would consistently fail to extract the Federal bulk ammo 40 grain. This is the common practice ammo which says "Federal Target performance grade" and comes in a 325 rounds packs.

I have a lot of this ammo and was hoping to use it up with this 22. At first I thought something was majorly wrong with the gun. Gave it a very good leaning and still failure to extract every round. Every round jammed. I changed ammo to to the CCI Mini-Mags 36 grain. WOW!! what a difference!! no jams , no failure to extract!! gun works and shoots GREAT!! went through the entire box of 300 CCI Mini-Mags without a single misfire, or failure.

Is this common? Is this normal? I thought some of the reviews I read on the M&P 22 before buying it stated it would eat any kind of ammo without ever jamming.

Any advice? Just stick with the CCI mini-mags and forget about the other ammo? Send it back to M&P?

tnx for your help and advice

Verrrrrry interesting. I recently bought a used M&P 22 pistol off Calguns, and I had the very same FTE issue with Federal Automatch 40 grain bullets. I have since cleaned and lubed the gun very well, and am planning on trying some Blazer, Winchester and CCI mini-mag, and we shall see. What I don't want, is a gun that needs mini mags to run reliably. Like I said, we'll see.

It may need more break in before it will digest most ammo types. Other M&P22 users have reported this. Try the Automatch again after 1000 rounds and see how it runs. Also try and get your hands on some M22.

What part of the state are you in? Maybe someone else can loan you a few rounds of other .22 ammo to try. If you are in Norcal I can let you try M22 and others if you meet me at Dillman range in Lincoln.

Well, I've got a new M&P 22 and had the same issues with the same ammo.

Having only 2, 22 semi auto pistols and reading countless threads about them being finicky, I've come to the conclusion, you have to try out MANY types of ammo before you find the right one for your pistol.

Some people hate WWB for their 22's, but my SR22 and M&P love it.

Find what works for you OP. Don't give up yet or send your pistol back prematurely.

I have never had any issues with mine - although, I have never used the Auto Match rounds.

I've fired 200+ rounds of Federal Automatch without issue.

Thank you all for you valuable info. I will continue to feed it the ammo it likes until it is well broken in and then try again with the automatch. I will post what outcome I get after 100 rounds or so.

Much appreciated! I love this forum !!

My guess is that you got a bad batch. Both my MP22 and Buckmark has eaten every type of ammo I can think of with zero issues. Then one time, I got box of M22 Winchesters and every round was having FTF and FTE on both guns. Tossed the box, got a new box and everything was back to normal.

Bulk rimfire ammo can vary vastly. Some are just plain weak. It's cheap for a reason. CCI Mini-Mag isn't the only game in town. Go look up muzzle energy for Mini-Mag. Pretty much anything with the same spec or greater will run just fine. Thunderbolt, Hornet, etc.

You may be right.....I don't recall the muzzle energy of the AM, but I do know the box says 1200 fps. I also think that CCI builds in a bit more quality or consistency into their minimag bullets.

take it as an opportunity to learn how to clear malfunctions. My GF has a Mosquito and after the break in period (about 500-800 rounds) she was clearing malfunctions so quick I have faith that she could do it on any other handgun as well. Lube is your friend. I've been using it on critical parts on her gun and it makes the slide operate so easily which is a must in any rimfire weapon.

She has plenty of CCI mini mags but those are for rainy days stash so she pretty much uses the cheapest of ammo and with the occasional FTF she keeps a firm hand on the firearm and has virtually no FTE's Its just to be expected with cheaper ammo but always best to stay with anything 1200 FPS and above.

                              Good luck.
