I just slip one lit BBQ briquet into the hole and cover. It'll produce carbon monoxide for hours, killing the whole gopher clan but leaving the ground unspoiled. (Not to be done around dry grass or peat soil, of course.)

      tree hugger ville

I had sensitive neighbors so I bought 3 of the solar powered ground stakes that make a funny noise that drives gophers crazy and they move on. about 3 weeks after I put them in the ground, tree hugger 1 tells me that he has a gopher problem. I told him he needed to kill them but he didn't like that option so to this day he has gophers destroying his landscaping and I don't have a problem.

I've wondered if those work. How big of a lawn did the 3 handle?

I had a gopher problem in my front lawn.

I tried poison, I tried traps, I tried washing them out with the hose, I tried waiting for them to stick their little heads up so I could shoot them. Nothing worked.

I then saw the little solar powered gopher stakes and bought a few.

My front yard is about 50 feet by 150 feet, so I got four of them. Inserted them into the lawn spaced evenly and staggered zig zag across the lawn.

They let out a high pitched buzz about every 90 seconds, and they hold a charge all night long.

The gophers get fed up with the noisy neighbors and move on to quieter premises.

So far they have lasted me two years and are still working.

They run about $25 each, but it is a $100 I would gladly spend again.

If you haven't seen it with your own eyes,
or heard it with your own ears,
don't make it up with your small mind,
or spread it with your big mouth.

We found these little traps that you just jam in the hole. They don't like things blocking their tunnels, so they will try to put them out and they get caught. These were extremely effective. The only small issue is, the tunnels are still there and new ones will eventually move in and the cycle begins again. We moved and now have ground squirrels instead, and they're even more destructive and nothing has worked besides shooting them.
Do unto others as you would have them do unto you, but do it first.

Hunting may be a dog's instinct but just like a bird dog, they required training. With a little training, they can be pretty darn good at catching gophers (they usually go after bigger prey that they can chase down the hole) Moles and Voles are a little tougher because they have to dig their way after them.

Yeah, so instead of little mounds of dirt on the lawn, you end up with long sections of gopher tunnel dug up by the dog, and your lawn looks like WWI trench warfare.

                            I just got another yesterday.

I have a thread somewhere if you search gopher.
Ive shot about 6 or so with a pellet rifle. the rest are with the black box trap.
Works great. Water does not work, were in a drought too and you just wasted water!

The smoke or gas just makes them run away.

Shove a couple of lit road flares in the hole and cover it up. Cheap and very effective (please be careful of gas lines!)
