.177 rifle for plinking

I'm looking at this gun right now:

But if you guys know any other airguns in the $100 range I'd appreciate any suggestions.

Purpose of the airgun is just for plinking/target practice at 10 yards or so. FPS doesn't need to be that high, the Stoeger is I think maximum 600 fps. What I'm looking for is decent accuracy and durability for a good price.

Mostly I don't want to buy something that will break or have problems somewhere down the line.

For ten yards, I like my Daisy Powerline 880. More than plenty powerful for backyard plinking. I shoot at 15 yards and pump it no more than five times (ten maximum).


The small scope on the scoped version does the job. I swapped out the scope for a Simmons 3x9x40 and it became a sweet bench-shooting air rifle.


Reliability-wise, I've had it for over a year and it has seen around 500 pellets and about the same in BBs. No issues so far.

im not sure about the one you posted, but i have an older Beeman rs1 that i have had for at least 7 or 8 years. its an awesome gun. i killed a cottontail at about 40 yds the other day and dropped him pretty quick. he hopped about 10 hops and died. im pretty sure they are in a similar price range to what you posted, and they come with a .177 and .22 barrel.

I have a friend who's selling his gamo silent whisper for around 100. Its a pretty nice break barrel in .177 he rarely ever used it

Is it the silent stalker whisper? That is a very nice air rifle for the price, but personally I'd just rather have a new out of box air rifle than a used one, even if it is in very good condition.

I made the same investment / ~100$, 10-15 years ago with Winchester's similar offering....it has been a bunch of fun since then and continues to be.

If I spend on another air rifle, I'd like to get something quieter...maybe in .22. As frugal as I am, if I get into the ~200$ range, I start wandering back towards the rimfire section

I have owned about 8 new prod. air rifles in the last couple years. Here are the best deals goin:

99 for the Crosman Phantom 1000 from PA
119 for the Crosman Fury Nitro Piston from PA (AMAZING DEAL)
150ish for the IZH-61 target rifle from PA (low FPS, high accuracy)
130ish for the Gamo Big Cat from PA (very popular, solid guns)
190 for the Gamo Bone Collector Bull Whisper from Walmart
275ish for the Diana RWS 34 (quintessential break barrel air rifle)


The Crosman Fury Nitro Piston from Pyramyd is a helluva deal and would be worth the extra few bucks IMO. Nitro Pistons are smooth and you dont usually find them in guns at those prices, but Crosman can offer quality for low price better than any other company. If you want a rifle that is perfect in every way and will be a family heirloom, get the D34.

All of the above will serve you well. I have used them all in some configuration or another, and the more expensive ones are either saving you weight (bone collector) or just being generally incredibly awesome old school German craftsmanship (RWS). Don't bother with companies like stoeger, ruger, remington... these are just chinese guns licensed to be sold under these brands, they have no relation to the actual ruger/rem/etc companies. Crosman is chinese, but they are solid and they are an awesome company that stands behind their products.

Thanks guys, I have to check out some of those other airguns you've recommended, but the RWS looks really awesome. If price was not a factor I would definitely be picking up one of those.

Try CL, usually you can pick up a Gamo or other brands for about 100.
People don't really know how to shoot a springer or give it enough break
in time or find the right pellets.

seems like a great price for a used rifle, always wanted to get back into air rifles. has anyone had any experiences with the ones at walmart i think its the big cat
