Beeman R7 Tuning

Hello,

I have a Beeman R7 pellet rifle my Grandfather acquired about 20 years ago. Says made in West Germany so unsure of the actual date it was made. I was curious what I might need to do to tune it, if I need to at all.

The R7/HW30 rifles generally shoot so well out of the box that they rarely need tuning. It could be, after 20 years or so, necessary to replace the seals. You’ll know right away if there’s a problem; the gun will almost certainly exhibit a harsh firing sequence, there will be a decided loss of accuracy, and the pellets may not even reach your target. You may also find bits of the seal in the bore.

If this happens, don’t panic. It’s a very easy fix for anyone with basic mechanical skills, and the internet is full of forums with tons of information about the R7.

A little note on applying grease to piston seals. I find that if I put a little moly grease on my finger and then just spread it around the circumference of the seal, it’ll be just about right. If you look at the grease on the seal and think it doesn’t quite look like enough was applied, then you’ve done it correctly.

Be sure that you use only silicone oil around the breech seal. Anything that is petroleum based like gun oil, 3-in-1, WD40, or even Crosman's Pellgunoil is not good and will ignite when the air rifle is fired. This is called dieseling and can damage the gun.

Yes only Synthetic Oils on teh Piston seals and breach seal.

R7/HW 30's are generally just fine the way they are.

I have 2 HW 35's and both were made in the late 70's. I have been shooting one of them since 1978 the other showed up at a friends shop a couple of years ago. Both have Leather Piston Seals and both get synthetic oil on them , I have replaced the breach Seals on both guns once about 5 years ago. they look like a Teflon O ring and are about $1 each.

By just keeping your gun lubricated you will never wear it out. They are built by people who know what they are doing, and also built to be used Extensively!

Your R7 is probably at least 30 years old since it's stamped Made in West Germany. After reunification manufacturing was stamped "Made in Germany". There was no West Germany after Oct. 3, 1990, only Germany.

One of the worst things you can do is not use it, often.
