No problems catching .22s out of an MRod.

Tape up the holes at the end of your session and call it done.

While an older thread I wanted to mention I saw a pretty cool homemade BB/Pellet catcher. It takes one bag of rubber mulch (6-7.00 at Home Depot), A five gallon bucket, and a circle cut cardboard the size of the bucket mouth.

Put the mulch in the bucket, cut the circle push the cardboard circle into the bucket to keep the mulch from moving too much and there you go.

If you place or hang a piece of carpet in front of the hay bale or sandwiched between hay bales it will be even more effective.

The most effective method is to redirect energy instead of trying to absorb or stop it. Even airsoft on full auto will degrade something like carpet used as a backstop to the point it becomes less or even ineffective. BB and pellets will easily go through concrete blocks in short time on full auto.

Use whatever you like as the target support but just put a sloping redirect behind it to send the projectiles to soft earth. A slanted backdrop that redirects the energy will far outlast anything else that tries to stop it and do it with less mess and hassle. I've used everything from plywood to cement board and as long as the angle is right it outlasts anything else that is vertical. A 3/8" thick inch piece of plywood at an angle will outlast a 3/4" piece of plywood sitting vertical. A 4x8 sheet fits into the bed of the truck. If I'm worried about higher power stuff like primer powered wax, foam or delrin I just throw some dirt on the reverse side, nothing is getting through even over a full weekend of fun. If I use PCP or anything with pellets then the same precautions as firearms are needed because it takes only one to end it all.

Short answer - yes. A straw bale will stop most all bb guns and pellet guns.

Longer answer - be careful of how you dispose of them later if you ever use lead pellets or bbs in them. I usually let my chickens have their way with the straw bales after arrows start poking out the back. I use rolled carpet in front of the bales to stop pellets so that they don't eat them. Occasionally one makes it into the straw but it's pretty rare.

I built a backstop with sand bags. Staggered 3 deep and you can shoot .30-06 and it will catch

I used straw bales before building a trap with mulch as a backstop. The bales I had were the smaller Michael's arts and craft-type. Even still, they worked great for catching bb's and pellets for softer shooting (up to 550 fps) air guns in .117. But not so much for larger calibers or harder hitting guns.

Great portable and silent trap is a electrical box, line the back with duct seal,, on the front use a clipboard with center rectangle cut out to clip targets on.

                    OR....

I have this, and custom stained and varnished it..

They stopped selling them, but you get the idea, a box with a clipboard and electrical seal.
