Just a reminder about airsoft in an urban environment -

At about 4:11 p.m., Redondo Beach police responded to a call about a man with a gun near the 2500 block of Gates Avenue; en route, they learned that the subject was shooting at another person in the area.

Officers arrived on scene and encountered the suspect, which led to the shooting.

And why wasn't the officer's body cam turned on?

The body cam is a great question. I have no idea how they are activated.

Is it a button to press on and off?
Does it activate when the car goes over a certain speed, or with lights or siren being activated?

Do you activate in the car or when out on foot?

          — airsofter who was running around with an airsoft shooting his friend?

Did the guy leave the red tip on the gun?

Did officer drive code- lights and sirens? If yes, why the heck not ditch the airsoft before they arrive for personal safety and to maybe avoid the city code violation on airsoft

          So many questions

Are you sure it was an airsoft (could it have been a pelletgun)? I didn't see any specifics mentioned about the gun.

              From the KTLA link above

A man with an airsoft gun was shot and killed by police in Redondo Beach on Thursday, investigators said

              — am I sure it was not a pellet gun??—

Nope. Not sure as the 3 “news’ outlets covering the story are contradicting themselves line after line.

After re-reading the KTLA post, first it says airsoft, then farther down it says pellet gun.

Just another media fail, because they don't know what they are talking about....

It appears to be a CO2 BB or pellet pistol. The magazine bump on the bottom of the grip is a giveaway...Also No orange muzzle, trigger guard, and orange stripe on grip as required by state law for airsoft. Anybody brandishing one of these should expect to be treated as brandishing a real firearm. Play stupid games.....you know the rest....N.A.F.G......

                        Reminder that...

Airsoft, BB gun, and pellet gun; they are all classified as imitation firearms under CA laws. [PC 16700(a)(1)]

It's illegal to openly display or expose an imitation firearm in public places. [PC 20170]

Exemption to this for an imitation firearm that has it's entire surface painted in bright colors or is made from translucent materials. Just having an orange tip does not meet the requirements for this exemption. [PC 20175(m)]

                        (i) The imitation firearm is used for a public display authorized by a public or private school or a display that is part of a museum collection.
                        (j) The imitation firearm is used in a parade, ceremony, or other similar activity for which a permit has been obtained from a local or state government.
                        (k) The imitation firearm is displayed on a wall plaque or in a presentation case.
                        (l) The imitation firearm is used in an area where the discharge of a firearm is lawful.
                        (m) The entire exterior surface of the imitation firearm is white, bright red, bright orange, bright yellow, bright green, bright blue, bright pink, or bright purple, either singly or as the predominant color in combination with other colors in any pattern, or the entire device is constructed of transparent or translucent material that permits unmistakable observation of the device’s complete contents. Merely having an orange tip as provided in federal law and regulations does not satisfy this requirement. The entire surface must be colored or transparent or translucent.

This is why when my kids wanted to have an airsift birthday party on our 5 acres, I made them contact all neighbors that bordered the property, and called SO and made the dispatchers and watch commander aware. All had to have ANSI eye pro, and some sort of face pro.

The public routinely conflates airsoft and airgun, seeing them as one in the same. It's no surprise that the initial draft of SB 199 required both airsoft guns and airguns to be painted like toys in bright colors.
