Suggestions for a quick and dirty indoor bb trap?

I want to shoot my Crossman legacy 1000 (essentially a newer, cheaper pumpmaster) indoors at close range - 5 meters or less - basically just practice breathing and trigger squeeze in a nice quiet area at the end of the day - it's how I meditate.

Problem is - those pumpmasters are surprisingly potent, even with bbs. Even 1 pump easily goes completely a soda can at close range.

I want to put together a poor man's bb trap - I'm envisioning multiples layers of cardboard or other media to slow the bb down, and a hard surface to stop the bb - the surface has to be hard enough to ensure the bb doesn't get through (or there'll be hell to pay w/ my landlord) but preferably soft enough not to create a ricochet hazard - I'm thinking I could just open the end of a cardboard box or plastic bin - put a piece of particle board at the end, and just put 7-8 layers of cardboard in front of it.

Should that be sufficient? Anyone have a better idea? Am I completely overthinking this?

Cardboard box filled with rubber mulch. One cubic foot is more than enough.

    I know for a fact 14" will stop a 223 at 50 yards.

Cardboard box with a flat newspaper in the back and crumpled newspaper stuffed in front of it till it’s full. Stops a 1000fps pellet gun every time
Rightful liberty is unobstructed action according to our will within limits drawn around us by the equal rights of others. I do not add 'within the limits of the law' because law is often but the tyrant's will, and always so when it violates the rights of the individual.

Like the others said fill a box with something newspapers, mulch, old rags and shirts, etc. You my friend love living on the edge. Shooting bb's at 5 meters or less? I'll take it you never saw "A Christmas Story"? I'd start by converting over to lead pellets. This will greatly reduce ricochet and your chances of keeping both eyes. Happy and safe shooting.

A stack of 25 flat cardboard boxes works great. Lots of size options and zero ricochet danger. BB holes are small enough that the boxes can still be used when you move.

Going to give this one a whirl first and see how it goes. This is what happens when you live in a small rental with nosy neighbors that can see into your backyard - everything has to happen indoors and out of sight

If you want to spend a little money, fill a box up with duct seal you can get at Home Depot. Lots of stopping power, and no rebound.

25 pieces of cardboard lined up inside a cardboard box did the trick - bbs only went through about 5 or 6 of them with two pumps and were straight on at close ranges. I'll probably play around with more pressure later with a piece of particle board in the back just in case I do make it through all 25 layers. Thanks for the suggestions.

I use what Paul R. wrote, the box filled with rubber mulch. Hang a target on the outside. Works great.

                        Electrical breaker box...

Fill with Duct putty in the back/rear

On the front, clip a clipboard, but cut out a square section for hanging the targets and allowing them to pass through.

You can buy this kit you can finish or use the electrical box, as I suggested..

I use the amazon boxes filled with foam nuggets. They came filled like this to protect the items inside. Stick a target on them and they work great.

Better yet use a cardboard box filled with sand.
Couple layers of cardboard in front to stop leakage and your GTG.
1 foot of sand will stop a BB with no problem and you can save them later to reload

Send me $ this idea is patented and tested.

I've used big and relatively flat boxes filled with old magazines or softcover books and duct taped. It'll work fast.
