South Carolina, especially for being such a Red State, has been a real PITA to the RKBA community for years, especially if you lived out of state and wanted to carry there! They did Honor Permits/Licenses from 29 other States, but NO non-resident permits (How is that even Constitutional?) and they did NOT issue permits to non-residents unless you owned real estate in South Carolina! Thus, here in Kaliforniastan we were screwed, even if we had finally obtained a CA LTC, South Carolina did NOT Honor CA!
So, South Carolina finally passed Permitless Carry (Open & Concealed) last year and became effective on March 07, 2024. Great. My only issue with these Permitless Carry statutes is that many are filled with legal landmines in the form of select "special" places that still require a permit to CCW. Now I am planning to be in Soth Carolina in a couple of months and have been researching this issue the past few weeks and finally called their State Law Enforcement Division (SLED) this week. SLED was responsible for maintaining the CCW permit recognition/reciprocity page for South Carolina, Well after Permitless carry took effect, SLED simply deleted ALL of the states and info and has never updated this!
SLED (sc.gov) (scroll to bottom)
I was hoping for an update as I always prefer to carry under the authority of a permit instead of relying on some statute that could suddenly be modified via case law. So, I spoke to SLED, and this is what they said, LOL! We are probably NOT going to update the website, son you don't need no permit here, don't even worry about it and you don/t have to bring it, because we won't even ask for it....Well, everything I have checked online seems to confirm this and I could not find any legal landmines in the form of places that would require a permit to CCW, so it looks like South Carolina got this one right.
This is a really solid bulletin that SLED published to provide guidance for carry in South Carolin under the new Permitless Carry statute: Constitutional Carry Guidance.pdf (sc.gov)
If anyone here can provide any further details or correct me on anything, I would sure appreciate it....
Thanks, Baja Daze
