For those of you that continue to ask, YES we do Nevada CCWs. However, we are not your traditional CCW class.

    Let me explain.

The state of Nevada requires an 8-hour course and to shoot 30 rounds. That may be well and good for many but we believe 7.5 hours in a classroom and then shooting a measly 30 rounds will not give you the skillset you need to defend yourself or others in OUR community should you one day find yourself facing a zero-sum situation.

We will get our classroom time, and during that time we will cover ALL the state's mandated materials; then we will go to the range to continue the classroom curriculum while we shoot for 6+ hours and over 200 rounds.

Our day starts with evolutions that cover stance, trigger control, sight alignment, draw stroke, etc. Then by the end of the day, we are moving and shooting and shooting steels for speed.

(It's not uncommon for classes to come an go on neighboring range bays before we load our weapons for the day)

If you've never touched a weapon before or you consider yourself an expert shot, I promise you will take away more knowledge and you will acquire new skillsets.

So if you are looking for the "cattle call " class where for $65.00 you get a cup of coffee, maybe a t-shirt and you shoot 30 rounds at bowling pins...
You're not my student and I'm not your instructor. No hard feelings, just keep looking, these classes are out there.

If you'd like you can hit me up, I'll give you their names. It's just not going to be me.

Thanks for stopping by, see ya on the range.

    -Scott

Really all CCW holders should WANT a class like that. I am fiercely pro 2A and don't feel it should be a requirement, but for those of us with a brain and sense of responsibility, a desire to sharpen both our shooting and decision making skills and legal our knowledge IMO should always be there.

I'm a pretty good shot, and I have a cool head... but I try to attend a CCW type class at least yearly and would always prefer something like yours OP. Good job.

Just going to note here that they are located in Reno, thus you will have to apply for your Nevada CCW in Washoe County....

Depends. Some counties will accept out of county instructors as long as they are approved by the SO and the training is done in NV.

Each County Sheriff has a list of approved trainers.

Check the approved trainer list for the County Sheriff you intend to apply to.

I recently decided to look into getting a Nevada non-resident CCW and was looking for an 8 hour class that Nevada requires. Most classes seem to spend the majority of the time sitting in a class followed by a 30 round shoot, which requires a 70% hit factor to pass. I wasn't sure my "posterior brain" could handle this type of class so I decided to do something a little different

I had seen the previous postings above in this thread for Nevada Firearms Academy and decided to take a drive up the hill to Reno and to give them a try. While they offer the type of class mentioned above, their preference is a class that is structured around 2 1/2 - 3 hours in the class, which includes the written test, followed by 4 hours or so on the range.

The class is a CCW Pistol 1 class. It starts with shooting individual rounds at a penny size target to practice trigger control and sight alignment. It then works on center mass shooting predominately from 3, 5 and 7 yards. (Note: we also shot about 6 rounds from 30 yards.)

Our class had about 18 shooters with skill ranges from never having touched a handgun to probably intermediate range. There was a mix of male and female. By the end of the range session, all 18 had passed the shoot test with a 100% score, which was a testimony to good instruction given the initial scatter-gun look of some of the targets.

Personally, I was more interested in looking at the backside of my target board at the end of the day. While I am not a novice, I was pleased with the overall results:

                backer board results.jpg

The top group was shooting at the penny decal.

The next group down was "eye box" or head shoots and failure to stop drill.

The next two rounds by themselves were body shots from 30 yards - gotta work on that

The main center mass group was all 10 and 9 ring with maybe two or three 8 rings. I was bummed about the 8 rings. I was focused and consistent all day on trigger control and sight picture until the last 2 or 3 shots before what I thought was going to be test time. I decided to speed up the draw a little and accuracy suffered. Instead of getting a new target hung for the test, we were told that we had already shot the test and passed - Yay, grumble, grumble

Overall, I want to give a shout out to Scott and his team for doing a fine job. I would recommend this course to any other Calguns members looking to get their hours in for a Nevada CCW. Whether you are relatively new to handguns or more experienced, this class has something to offer everyone.

But, you will still need to learn about NV laws.

Which are different than CA and AZ laws regarding the legalities of CCW.

Nevada gun laws allow for the open carry of firearms without the need for a license or registration. However, you must obtain a CCW to carry a concealed weapon.

The Nevada training certificate is good for 1 year. I finally got around to setting up an appointment at Washoe County SO before mine expired.

Beautiful drive up the hilltoday; less than 20 minute appointment; drivers license, copy of submitted online application, copy of training certificate, electronic fingerprints and check for $100.25.

Staff was courteous and efficient. All in all, everything was easy, peezy.

Supposed to hear in 120 days or less. Will report back.

I like with the NV CCW, you're exempt from BG checks. Although you still have to fill out 4473, that's fine. Way better than CA, you gotta do it for ammos and firearms...

While the course looks interesting, the only offering was for June 4. There do not appear to be any other offerings for this course through August. At that point, the calendar is blank.
