    IWB Holster For Bigger Guys

    Hi Calgun Crew,

I was reading the other posts here, and surely enough, others who are on the larger side have issues carrying comfortably.

I lost around 40 lbs. over the years, but could surely afford to lose 40 lbs. more, but I just don't manage to be able to do so with plateau all the time, and that's with daily swimming or walking 2 miles most days. I'm a bigger guy, and I don't like the feel of carrying at all on my waistline, as it brings the pants down. I'm new to the CCW world, with approval finally having been granted this past week, and I have a belly band, which I like, and I went out for a walk for the first time the other night, and it actually helped my back as well, but this will be an issue during the Summer, of course, being so warm, and I'm reluctant to carry anything that I can't place on safety with it, since it's soft material, of course, and not a hard shell. On my CCW I have a Sig P365, an S&W Model 642 revolver, and a Glock 19. They all fit well in the belly band, but I've not felt right carrying the 38 Special or the Glock 19 in it, even if the trigger pull is much longer on the revolver, and have only gone with the Sig thus far, which feels well. I also have a pocket holster, which the claim is to be able to pull it out easily in the case of the revolver and the Sig, as it's supposed to separate, but it may separate maybe 2/10 times, so it's not reliable, but I've carried the Sig with it, and lately I'm still in shorts, and have to really draw the string so tight on the shorts to keep the pants up with anything of such weight in one's pocket. With the belly band I've placed it over a shirt and with a jacket over it, and printing is not an issue with a looser jacket, but maybe a bit with the Glock 19, so again, not carrying that for this reason as well.

I've worked on tv shows as a background actor, where I've been a detective, and even with a prop gun on my side, which is rubber, with an OWB holster, I still don't like the feeling of pants being pulled downward from the weight, so this gives you an idea that it's an issue for me, and even if a cell phone is too heavy in my pocket, I don't like it at all, as I miss the days of the flip phones.

In this case, I'm looking for some advice, please, with an IWB, maybe especially for bigger guys? Are there any tips to avoid the pants falling down? Anything I'm missing doing? Does one always have to have a belt on to wear one? I wear shorts a good half of the year, so this would be an issue, even with the Sig being so light in weight, and the revolver as well, but it still pulls down. I can carry from anywhere from 9:00 to 3:00, but 1:00 seems most comfortable. Naturally, first priority always is to be safe, and this is what we all must practice, as my experience from carrying anything else was many moons ago in a far away place as a soldier with an M16, so of course, not quite the same as a CCW situation. The belly band is great, but again, it can't wear it during every season of the year, and not with larger guns in my case, though, I saw some facebook ad come up with a kydex holster that can attach to a belly band, and this seems cool, making it safer in the case of the Glock 19 and revolver.

Please, fellow Calgunners. Any advice would be much appreciated, and I always appreciate the education offered here in discussions.

    Thank you in advance!

You have to adjust your clothes to CCW, no getting around that. Wear cargo shorts that can take a belt. If your wearing a undershirt and over shirt or jacket, wear suspenders, not big lumberjack ones, thin dress ones. For the 365 or the 19, I've found IWB that have a wide backing platform to work the best and be the most comfortable, look at the Galico King Tuck or Crossbreed Super tuck style holsters. Key with any belt holster is the belt has to be a gun belt. It has to be wide and stiff to support the weight. For the record, I'm also a bigger guy with similar guns on my CCW. 90% of the time my 642 is in my jeans pocket in a Galico leather pocket holster, Glock 43 in a Galco King Tuck, or a Glock 26 in a fanny pack.

      Hi G Force Junkie,

Thank you so much for all this info! I never thought about the cargo shorts option with a belt. Usually, I wear shorts with elastic, but would consider making the change, as well as with the suspenders, and can sport the Urkel look with them as well. In middle age, I suppose it will work fine now. I'll check out those brands as well, and your advice is much appreciated.
