    Test Shield Mag Extension

Those on the forum who know me, know that I own a concealed carry store, and that I am very conservative in offering products. They have to work. We have just added a new to us product to our line up. Testing went great, and the product solves a problem that anyone who has purchased a Shield has faced. For most of us that 7 round mag that comes with the gun, is short, great of concealment, but provides a lousy purchase on the grip for those of us that have large hands. The usual solution is to add a pinky extension which is OK, but you still only have 7+1. Mine has sat in my range bag, and I carry with an 8 rounder in the gun.

Strike Industries is producing a +2 contoured mag extension for the Shield, G42 and G43. After our testing we decided to stock the Shield (I will be carrying it on my personal weapon) and G43 in our Orange County store and will be adding it to our website.

It is available directly from Strike Industries, and other vendors, we just happen to have them in stock.

The purpose of this post is to say if you have a G42/G43/Shield this is a product worth buying. Inexpensive, functional. For the Shield the extended 7 round mag is now a 9 round mag giving me a 9+1 capacity, feels so much better in the hand than either the 7 or 8 round factory mag. Makes for a much better feeling draw well moving, functions perfectly as it uses your original 7 round mag, spring and floor plate. When installed it's essentially the same length as the 8 round mag, only much better grip.

The link below is to a video I found on you tube that does a great job of showing the E.M.P. Enhanced Magazine Plate (no that isn't me in the video).

I have tried this unit on an 8 round mag, making it a 10 round mag. It feels great in my hand, but it is as long as a stock full size M&P grip, makes it harder to conceal and would require a little sanding of the insert piece carried over from the 8 round to assure proper seating, so I would not recommend using them with your 8 round mag.

Check out the review. Did this guy put it on his 8 round mag?

It will fit on the 8 round mag, it's not very concealable, and during rapid reloads may not seat well unless you do some grinding on the plastic insert. Feels OK in the hand, Strike Industries doesn't recommend it.

The Amazon price is a little on the high side. We have them in store for $14.99, 10% off that for active LEO and Fire.

Strike Industries is having trouble keeping up with demand but we will have them at the Ontario Gun Show, along with a sample for people to feel.

Great improvement over the stock 7 round with a pinky extension. Even better for a couple of dollars more than the pinky extension you can add two rounds.

The extension for the G43 works every bit as well.

        Grant,

Can you elaborate on how you tested the reliability? My concern is always giving up spring tension when using a short spring in a longer tube. I know the stock spring is stiff, but I trust it to get the next round where it is needed.

*listen to Grant. He knows his stuff.

Initial test was on the flat range at On Target where I am a member. Follow up testing was conducted at Iron Sights in Oceanside where I like to Shoot Thursday night steel matches, IDPA and USPSA. My concern was functionality both with the magazine starting in the gun at the draw. (I love the way it feels and provides a better grip than even the 8 rounder) and when used as a reload from the mag pouch. On the flat range there are bad habits that some equipment has that can be masked by the fact that you have time. Poor sights, finicky ammo, crappy mags. In competition each issue creates a problem that impacts performance. Competitive shooting is about as close as I can get, I am not going out looking for a fight.

My concern was feed, and if it could sustain being dropped. I don't mistreat my equipment, but I refuse to baby it either. If your doing a reload on the move I drop the mag and pick it up after the round.

It has done what I want it to do very well. Like anything you have to run it for yourself. For me I have tended to leave the seven rounder in the safe. I have ten 8 round mags, so it wasn't a necessity, but reloads are where time is lost and errors happen. Now I carry every day with the 7 rounder converted using the extension to a 9 rounder. With one in the pipe I have 10 rounds in the gun, I subscribe to the more is better philosophy, but obviously it has to work.

So far it's been great. Well more is better, which is why I was willing to shoot matches with the 10 round Pro Mags, I would never carry with them. Plainly they are crap.

If your coming to the OC gun show stop by and see how it feels in your hand. I should still have some in stock. I have Glock 43's on order and should have them by the show. Just finished the California Gang Task Force national seminar and both I and Blue Collar Guns sold out. I have to check Artemis to see if I have any still in stock.

If your in the Mission Viejo area and are going to be shooting at On Target, we might be able to get together and you can try mine.

If you know me, it's more important to provide the information and help you make a decision that is right for you, than to make a sale. These are after all life and death choices.

          Hope that answers the question

I have some Hyve extensions. They work fine.
If you find yourself in a fair fight, you're doing it all wrong.

The same extension works for both the 9mm and .40S&W. the difference is that it adds 2 rounds for the 9mm, and only 1 round for the .40S&W.

The Hyve is a very well built extension, however it's twice the price, and the ergonomics aren't nearly as good. It looks good, adds color, but not grip texture or natural fit to the lower two fingers like the E.M.P..

The Hyve is available for more guns currently than the E.M.P.

I have both the factory 6 round mag with the curved pinky extention that came with the gun, and 3 of the S&W 7 round extended mags that are of course a little longer, without the curvature. Is this mag you are describing an 8 round .40 S&W mag?

Well if your coming to the OC Gun show to stock up on ammo, stop by and check it out. I think its a great investment, I carry it, but I am also a seller so like anything take it with a grain of salt.

This is an extension that replaces the base of your 6 round mag to make it a 7 round in .40 S&W so it's not as much of a capacity advantage for the .40 S&W as it is for the 9mm. It really depends on what your paying for 7 round mags whether it's worth it or not to convert the 6 to a 7. The ergonomics are certainly better.

Has anyone tried this EMP +2 and the Magguts +1 with a Shield 9mm 7 round magazine making 10 rounds?

In using the +2 from Strike Industries on a Shield 9MM

Is there any difference in carrying in a IWB holster ? ( Comfort , Size )

Will the pistol 'Pattern' with this larger mag ?
