    Carry Sights For M&P Shield

Trying to determine what defensive carry sights I want to use, I'm pinned between XS Big Dots and Trijicon HD sights. Never used Big Dots before but I like the idea of them and cheaper in price than the HD's. Any recommendations?

Trijicon HD on my Shield (but it's not on my permit any more)... Great for day and night use

TruGlo TFO are nice too... I have them on XD-S

Meprolight are very good for the price - I use them on USPc... they are more crude looking (not as refined as the other two) - but very stout and easily seen in bright and low light.

For the price; either Mepro or TFO... for the look and quick acquisition, Trij HD... for the versatility (fiber optic and tritium), TFO... for durable and brightness in dark, Mepro.

All three are good - for different reasons... can't go wrong with any of them.

The luminescence ring on the Pro-Idot sight from Ameriglo does not last if you shoot much. I've got it for my M&P, M&P PRO and Compact. The ring has broke-off the sight in 3 occasions. Got warranty replacement and I put some epoxy to see if it would help making it last longer. Otherwise they are good sight and less expensive alternative to Trijicon HD.

That surprises me. I have the same Pro-Idot and I shoot quite a bit. No problems yet. But I will definitely keep an eye out for it. Ameriglo has great customer service. I am a big fan of the pro-idot

I average about 1000 round a month. Since Ameriglo has a "no warranty for amazon purchase" policy, that's bad news to me because I bought most of them on Amazon to take advantage of my prime membership, so if my sight went bad again I am SOL. I was a big fan until this happen to me 3 times since 2013. Please note I have MGW dedicated sight pushing tool so it's not that I damage the sight using hammer and punch during installation. I still have them on my gun, but adds Epoxy to the front sight to see if that would help it last longer. I shall see in about a year.

What exactly are you doing here? Using some kind of clear epoxy or coating applied over the face of the painted ring and Tritium vial?

That's exactly it. I check local Home Depot and the best I can find is the Epoxy for plastic, which is clear with slight yellow tint with max temperature tolerance of 150C. Mix slowly so there is little bubble in the epoxy, than apply a drop and cover the surface of the front sight that faces the shooter, including luminescent ring and tritium vial. So far I've shoot north of 1K rounds but that's just the beginning.

Note the construction of the Ameriglo Pro-idot sight is Trijicon tritium vial insert, encased with the luminescent ring and a small glass cover in front of the tritium vial to make everything flush. My experience is the small glass cover will be gone first, than the luminescent ring will crack, and finally flake off.

When looking at Trijicon HD sight, it has similar Epoxy coating over the HD ring and tritium insert. Of course it's done a lot more elegant than what I've done here.

Thanks for the clarification - I had hoped Ameriglo had rectified the problem with the iDots. Guess I'll just source a premium ultra-clear epoxy and do like you to try to avoid problems down the road.

I use the Meprolight brand on my Shield and G19. No issues, and very bright at night.
