    SmartCarry issues

I have been having some issues with the SmartCarry holster I have been using. Wondering if anyone else is having similar issues. I guess this can serve as a warning to others who are considering using one for deep concealment.

I bought the smart carry to deep conceal the Ruger LCR along with a spare speed loader. For that purpose it was fantastic. I have since re-evaluated my needs and wanted the ability to carry a semi-auto with a greater capacity than the 5-rounder LCR. I bought the M&P Shield .40 to replace the Ruger as my EDC. I do like the Shield since it is slender enough to completely disappear in the SmartCarry along with an extra mag.

Two issues are concerning me now that I have been carrying for a while with this setup. The first is that I have had several instances where I have checked my setup during the day while using the bathroom and found that either the safety had been taken off or the magazine had been released. This bothers me on several levels.

When using a urinal you have to push the entire package up from the bottom so that you can get to your package and do your business. This alarms me since I noted the safety being disengaged a few times. Somehow, possibly because the SC is getting a bit worn (?), the safety is getting released while it is bouncing around in my pants all day.

It scares me to be manipulating the gun inside my pants when I am not 100% confident in the safety being engaged. I have seen pics of worn out IWB holsters that have bunched up and gotten inside of the trigger guard. I can just see a fold in the SmartCarry getting inside the trigger as I am pushing up the whole thing and causing a ND. My fears of this have become more acute lately since the SC is getting worn out and the barrel is protruding through the bottom. I can feel my finger going RIGHT OVER the muzzle when pushing the gear up so that I can get to my gear. And HEAVEN FORBID the thing NDs while pointing at my Johnson!! Talk about going off half-cocked!

The second issue I am having is that the mag release is getting pushed while it is inside my pants also. Several times I have taken the thing off at night or sat on the toilet only to find the magazine is not seated in the mag well. The SC is deep concealment anyways and it will be slow to present a firearm from the front of my pants. But what if I "whip it out" in a SHTF situation and as I am presenting the weapon the magazine falls to the ground. With the CA compliant mag safety I would not even be able to get off ONE SHOT!

It may be I just need to get a new SC. I don't know. Mine is pretty worn out and getting soft and crumpled around the edges. Just thought I would share my observations after using mine for about a year with the Ruger and another 9 months with the Shield. I still like the setup. I just have to be a bit more cautious when using it and have to check it more often now. But for deep concealment the SC is the bomb.

    YMMV.

Do you use this holster every day?

I can see certain situations may call for this type of holster but I wouldn't want my gun slapping me in the nuts every single day. Fer Christ sakes!

Printing is overrated IMO. Nobody knows you are carrying unless you tell them. It just does not register in the average Joe or Jill's mind.

Why not try a different holster that suits your needs better and is a lot more comfortable, convenient, and safer? It sounds like the one you have is on its last legs as it is.

Stop using your current Smart Carry holster.
It is worn out, replace it before it causes an accident.

Get a good IWB holster to carry your S&W M&P-40 Shield.

Hmmm if I had a holster that tended to randomly release the mag and disengage the safety it would go to the trash instantly.

Really, there are so many good products out there why would you screw around with something that causes major malfunctions?

I hear ya. This holster is the only one that I have in my quite ample holster drawer that fills the bill for my needs right now. I have some TTGunleather and other custom IWBs for my XD40, RIA 1911, and my Shield .40. NOTHING conceals as well as the SC. I posted my critique to get some input because I want to order a new one (I KNOW this one is on its last legs) but I am concerned about the mag and safety issues. Will those haunt me still with a new one? I guess there is one way to find out. I will have to get another one.

In the meantime, I have been avoiding the urinals and using the stalls instead. Since I have some issues with trusting my current one I have to visually inspect the weapon at each bathroom trip. Yes, it is a PITA but needs to be done until I have faith in it again. Which, in fact, may be never...

Thanks for even reading my WOT and giving your input.

Don't blow your junk off, bro. I'm pretty sure that holster alone violates rule 2

Over 2 years and LOTS of use.

Of course...THAT was the rationale that started this thread.

I CCW'd a Glock 26 and Kahr MK9 for 6 years daily in a SmartCarry and didn't have the wear you have described. I would consider getting a new one or consider a different holster.

As a side note, the Shield had a strong safety catch. I would love to see a pick of the holster with the gun in it (obviously with you not wearing it lol) to see where the holster might be catching.

There is enough risk and enough signs that are clearly saying: You need to get rid of that holster now.

absent explaining ( this is anonymous, so why not?) why you would need daily concealment commensurate with a deep undercover operative infiltrating a gang for ex., its hard to give advice.

If its a fantasy, or personal preference that you need to keep a gun there, there, and nowhere else, consider is it worth blowing off your gonads?

Have you considered switching to a DAO revolver for this application?
Dr. Goldstein showed us the way. We dropped the ball. Pick up the ball.

                          Replace it.
I have used a SC off and on since 06 and have no wear like you described.
Nor have I had a mag drop because of the mag catch being inadvertently activated.
                          * Glock 26 -Kimber 3" and Taurus M85 w/3" bbl. *

Having a ND while wearing one of these doesn't concern me.
                          Trigger is 100% covered.
Nothing to snag/push on mag catch. Not sure how OP's is getting pushed. ???
Properly wearing it in front of your junk and NOT above it is required for correct fit.
This rig doesn't require a different size pant like many of us need when wearing IWB.
Comfortable with whatever you're wearing. I like to jog/run, bike, motorcycle riding etc.. Doesn't dk punch you while running either. Properly wearing it is key.
Like all CW holsters, it is NOT THE BEST! Only another choice that might work for you.
