Appendix Carry??

I'm considering Appendix Carry should I actually get my LTC with Peruta. Would like to hear opinions from those with experience carrying with this method. How does it work for you? Tips and tricks? Things to watch out for when choosing a holster? Which holster you prefer for this method of carry? Etc. In particular, is anyone carry a full size 1911 in this manner and how is that working for you?

And yes, I realize the obvious risk that the gun is pointing at your junk and/or femoral artery.

I would suggest that a 1911 is not the best choice for appendix carry, simply because it's got pokey things on the back (extended grip safety, hammer) that will poke into you when you bend over to tie your shoes etc.

I guess a mitigating solution could be one of those holsters with the oversize leather backing, but I think those have other issues.

I'm a big fan of the JM Kydex appendix holsters.

I recommend a blue line concealment holster. They are very well made and very comfortable.* Full size guns take a little adjustment when you need to sit. Otherwise, carrying appendix is very comfortable.

I used a JM Kydex for my Glock 26. I wore it at 1:00 position.

I've tried appendix carry a couple of times. While I think drawing is much quicker with appendix carry as opposed to hip/back carry, it was just too uncomfortable for me.

For ap carry, you want a small, single clip holster like a galco or don hume, IMO.

I'm only comfortable with a snubbie for appendix. The rest are on the side/ rear quarter

You likely have awhile to wait before San Diego starts issuing. Apendix carry is fine, but will depend on where you wear your belt line. There is a whole debate on the 1911 as a carry weapon, I personally don't care for them, but you can fit it. My suggestion is bring your gun to the Cross Roads of the West Gun Show at the Del Mar Fairgrounds Dec 13th and 14th and try out some holsters. Stop by my table, PackinFurDefense, and try out a couple of holsters I have that will likely work for you. Since San Diego is slow rolling you have time to shop, try on and compare. In the meantime if you have done any combat type shooting with your 1911 consider stopping by Iron Sights in Oceanside for some Thursday fun matches, or Sunday competitive IDPA, and other matches. It's eye opening.

I carry a 9mm shield in a desantis 106 leather holster and the trigger guard is covered. I was unable to engage the trigger during practice while unloaded but I still worry about shooting my balls off. I have heard of worn leather holsters failing. It is comfortable and draws fast in this position. I would recommend a kydex quality holster if you plan to AIWB. I'm looking at a g-code incog for the shield.

I'd stay away from anything double stack or full size. It can be concealed carrying appendix but it sticks out and can be uncomfortable. I'd recommend something along the lines of a shield or xds, something single stack. Even with a smaller gun it at times can be uncomfortable. I just ordered a Celtic holster online. Waiting for it to show up. I was using a cheap kydex holster that ive had for about a year, went to unclip it from my belt and the plastic clip cracked.

I've only been carrying for a week now, but I can tell you I'm already thinking smaller guns are better. I too love my 1911, but for carrying, I'm thinking about getting a 32. That would be a better pocket carry option. 1911s are great, but not for concealed carry. Start with an appropriate gun then worry about how to carry it.
