Taking your CCW into a bank with a metal detector

So I was in Van Nuys today and stopped by my bank. I've never been in a bank in Southern California before and was quite surprised by the access control unit and metal detector which was set off by my Springfield Armory XD 40 Sub, spare 9 round mag, Kershaw Blur knife, and money clip. I had a moment of panic as I wondered what was going to happen but they buzzed me through and greeted me as if nothing happened.

So no one questioned you at all? Is this your regular bank? Maybe they know you are "ok" if they see you fairly often. I carry into my bank, but they don't have a metal detector.

That is weird. Like setting off the shoplifting alarms at Lowe's and they don't care. It happens so much they just wave you on. Funny.

they prolly just assumed it was your keys or your belt. Im sure it is set off everyday if they dont ask you to remove everything metal before you go through

They probably looked at you, profiled you and said meh, he looks harmless

Also, not all banks in So Cal have the extra security devices, it's mainly banks that are in "certain city/neighborhoods" that have them. It's unfortunate, but it is what it is.

That's because it's in Van Nuys. It's the bank robbery capitol of LA. I used to bank at the Wells Fargo on Van Nuys Blvd and Vanowen. Years ago they installed a bullet-proof plexiglass barrier wall to the teller area. It's very large and it blocks the sound from the tellers. It is very uncomfortable to experience. Several times I just missed a robbery there.

Compare to my local Wells Fargo bank here in Carlsbad. No security, no plexiglass barriers, no metal detectors, an open teller area you can sit down and acctually interact with a bank rep.

It's the difference in banking in a violent, third world South American country and banking where Father Knows Best banks. It's not like you are 100 miles south, it's like you traveled to a different country.

Kind of reminds me of the jewelry stores that you have to be buzzed into, that let anyone in. Once your in they don't have to buzz you out, and since they let everyone in what extra security is it actually providing?

I've never been in there before. I was wearing a hat and sunglasses but I took off my sunglasses and put them on my hat as I always do when I enter a place. None of the three people that entered after I did set off the alarm so I'm guessing the sensitivity is lower. I did notice a tray in the corner for what I am assuming is to empty your pockets if requested but thankfully they didn't ask.

Its called security theater. Its all show. Kinda like TSA
"It wasn't a failure of laws," said Amanda Wilcox, who along with her husband, Nick, lobbies for the California chapter of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence. "I just don't see how our gun laws could have stopped something like that."

Its just a deterrent. Like bike locks; a thief will pass because they know there is an easier target eventually.

Also, their insurance, other than FDIC, may be cheaper in the area with such deturants and countermeasures. Like how auto insurance is usually cheaper with any anti theft.

                        Act "as if"

Blame the keys. Or blame the body piercings (ask if they want to see). Unless someone is waving wands and doing pat downs its fine.

I have see banks that have the "trap". First door must close before second will open.

Go through the first door and it locks behind you. No way out......
