    Tulare county application process

So I'm sitting in the Visalia jail parking lot having just completed the paperwork for my CCW from the sheriff's office. Easy and (relatively) painless process, now the waiting game starts.

9/9 - went in with my car registration and application; was told I needed to print off and fill out the three references page before I could turn in anything. It's on the CCW webpage for Tulare county in the bottom list of links

9/11 - having printed out everything I needed, went back to the sheriff's office. Was told by the girl that, because they don't do investigations, I needed to fill out the ENTIRE application (I'd kept sections/pages 7-9 clear based on the app's instructions), which included my address and a repeat of several earlier questions. Filled those out, signed my name to the appropriate three lines, then initialed all 13 pages. Got my mugshot taken with what I'm assuming will be my CCW number, was fingerprinted, then proceeded to shell out $112.

Next step, besides waiting for the call that I've been approved or not, is to take the CCW class from a local range. Once I'm approved and have my class certificate, I'll come in, pay another $75, turn in the cert, and hopefully walk out with my license.

Fingers crossed my wait isn't horrible!!

I thought it wasn't legal for them to charge any amount until you have been approved?
"It wasn't a failure of laws," said Amanda Wilcox, who along with her husband, Nick, lobbies for the California chapter of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence. "I just don't see how our gun laws could have stopped something like that."

No idea. I also was told on this forum that the references list is also illegal but this is what they asked for and I wanted my CCW so just complied.

Not so. They as you or I want to and deserve to be paid for services rendered. The initial application, photo and fingerprinting cost money to process regardless of the future outcome of your CCW status.
The way it was in Tulare county when I got my CCW (I'm coming up on my first renewal) I was advised as an option to not take my CCW training course until after I received approval, a thoughtful suggestion to save fee monies just in case I didn't get approved. I picked up and passed the CCW training course the day after I was approved.

Im pretty sure it's in the PC that they cannot make you pay until you are approved. I was approved in fresno county before I had to pay anything. Not sure about the references, I didn't have to do that either.

There are California state written guidelines in place as to how each county SHOULD conduct the CCW process but if you search this and other forums, the process is widely diversified from one county to another. Tulare county right or wrong wants a portion of the fee up front at the time of filing. Do you really want to argue that point with them? Why would you? Something you're trying to hide from them? Sooner or later you're going to pay the same amount of dough.

At this point, I just want my CCW so followed their lead. Nothing they asked for, including the three references, were terribly undue; the amount I paid was what I read online. It didn't come as any real surprise, neither the "early" payment or extra paperwork.

As soon as I know more I'll post, but from what I'm reading online here the Tulare county process takes about a month. I just figured folks would like an account of exactly what to expect with the process.

I just turned in my packet Friday for my CCW in Tulare County and did the live scan and all. Even had a guy after me turning in his packet.

Application was simple and had no problem giving 3 references or paying the fee in advance. She told me it should take 2-4 months but hopefully it's quicker then that.

It truly is a painless procedure-the hardest part is the wait. Keep us informed.
As a side note, I go in for renewal in just a little over a month from now, still have to take the four hour safety class but the paperwork is minimal and upon turning in the correct docs and fees, you leave the Sheriff's office with a renewed permit in hand.

My 3 references received their letters Monday and shipped/handed them all by today.

Not sure how long till I hear something back after this step.

Got the call Friday my CCW has been approved. Taking the class Monday morning and hopefully picking up the permit afterwards.
