Antelope Valley Medical Center- no guns

My daughter gave birth to twins there and when I went to visit her at the birthing center they had two guards on the door with metal detectors and a sign that said "Government ID required for visitors".

Before I even got the wand I handed over my DL and my LTC and the guard looks at it and says "Are you carrying?"

    I said, "I'm always carrying"

He asked if I was a cop and I told him "No," and he told me that only police were allowed to carry in the hospital.

I went back out and locked my gun up in my truck and going back in I had to get a visitor's pass but the guard didn't wand me again. Every time I went in and out of the hospital for the rest of the afternoon the guy just waived me through without wanding me.

He was very polite and friendly so I think that he was just letting me know that he wouldn't be re-checking me.

That's the first time that I've ever been checked going in and out of a hospital. Are metal detectors common in Los Angeles County hospitals?

A lot of hospitals use metal detectors at the entrance.

Its not uncommon. I have been in several ER departments when gang members come in to kill someone they did a drive-by on but the guy lived.

Harbor UCLA (county hospital) .... makes its patients and visitors go through detectors 24/7. Employes with a hospital badge can go through freely.

Long Beach memorial .... I havent been inside for a while but they used to wand you as you came in after 8PM

St Jude in Fullerton .... they wand both patients and visitors going through certain entrances.

The current hospital I work at (wont say where) has a no guns policy even though the security guards all carry. They dont have metal detectors or signs up but they dont allwo guns. Which is joke cuse one look at those guards and youll know they cant protect anyone. On a side note, the local Sheriff and swat team was recently on campus doing a active shooter drill. I was too busy working so I couldnt go out and watch but it looked pretty crazy.

As a side note, I have not seen metal detectors in the two south Orange County hospitals that I visit.

I've never personally seen a metal detector at a hospital, but then I avoid the entire LA area whenever possible, it upsets me just being there. No offense.

But yes, I imagine that there is a good reason for it, as was mentioned. At least he was polite. I imagine some security guards might freak and call the cops immediately. Which isn't what you want when you're trying to enjoy family time.

        Congrats on the grandkids.

Most county type hospitals have metal detectors. I have not seen any in a community type hospital.

I was just in Scripps last week, no metal detector. Carried happily. Echo what Simi surfer said, most all county hospitals due to criminals being treated there.

AV Hospital Women's Pavilion is mainly Medi-cal patients, and a few private patients. Hence the need for metal detectors.

                Thanks guys.

I've never seen a metal detector or guards on the doors any other hospital, even the county hospital here in Kern County.
