    dumb question..

tried quick search on this forum and whatnot with phrases like "ccw before buy" and so on, searches with only the critical/key words are usually the way to go.. no joy.

is it required to BUY the gun before you apply for a CCW?

i can probably legally purchase one but my record could very well keep me from a CCW and if that be the case, i dont wanna bother buying one. its ridiculous to only be able to have a gun in one location.

my record is just piddling stuff from age 18-20 and im late 30s now.. but still.

one reason i ask is because not just the make/model but also the serial has to be on one's permit right? therefore i cant just say 'yeah uhhh glock 19, shield 9mm, blahblah' in anticipation of the future.

The whole process from application to permit takes months. You don't typically have to own the gun when you apply but will need to get it before you range qualify and get your permit. I would suggest you apply and be honest with them that you do not intend to purchase a handgun unless you are approved. That way they can do their background check and let you know.

We already have the only reasonable Gun Control we need, It's called the Second Amendment and it's the government it controls.

See if what you did is on this list here:

And here is info on how you can check your eligibility based on the state's records:
Attention Beginning December 1, 2021, applicants must electronically submit a Law Enforcement Release (LER) application for the return of firearm(s), ammunition, and/or ammunition feeding device(s) via the California Firearms Application Reporting System (CFARS). Applicants that do not already have a CFARS account will be required to create an account in order to directly communicate with the Department and to check the status of an application. The Department will no longer accept paper LER application (BOF 119) submissions.

Even if you are a card-carrying good guy, that still does not mean you will get a CCW.

I don't believe that it's required by law for you to previously own an intended gun gun in order to apply, but as a practical matter I'm not sure how an issuing agency would treat an application wherein make/model/caliber/serial was blank. In Kern County, the very first line on the very first page is a very prominent "COMPLETE THE ENTIRE APPLICATION!!!"

yeah, ive read through those pdf's and one of my minor offenses from south carolina, age 18, is on there.. although at the top it says "ten years from date of conviction blahblah" so im probably fine.. but who knows.

therein lies the problem. oh well.. guess later ill get some money together and just try buying the damn gun and start from there.

before you buy, check with the IA. In Sacramento County (and others) the Sheriff does not require the firearms be declared on the application at the initial submission. In Sacramento, I left the firearms blank, as I hadn't yet decided what I wanted on the permit. Later, I decided, fired qualifications with them, and presented the quals at the final interview to put them on the license.

Other agencies may have other rules. You need to check with them.

In LA County, you must listed all guns, make model serial number that you intend to CCW on application. Guns must be registered to you.

Placer county kind of requires you to own it first, because when you schedule the appointment there serial of the gun is required. Before the interview they stress making sure the gun is registered to you corrected and the SN was not recorded wrong.

Same as in Fresno County, and I had three guns listed, buttttt by the time I got my approval to go ahead, and take my classes, I had changed to three different guns, when you go in with your Cert to actually have your license issued, at that time they check the guns are registered to you.

I asked the Deputy when I originaly submitted my app, what if I change out guns? he said it didnt matter, you dont even need to list any now you can leave that blank, In fact he said they hate to see folks by carry specific guns to only be denied down the road, all that matters is when you come back in with your certs, at that time you have the guns listed , they are in your name, and your cert is for those guns, they will run them at that time.

I also just completed my renewal, I walked in, told them all my guns had changed again, here's my new cert, the girl ran them as we spoke, typed up my CCW and said have a great day.

Each countly might be different, but I bet in every countly, folks change guns quite often by the time they are in the final stages.

                      Ah.

San Diego is unlikely to issue before the resolution of the Peruta Federal lawsuit. We might be years from that resolution. Maybe Gore will not run for re-election and the Sheriff's policy will change without the case being finished.
