Looking for a training class for my sons, who is the BEST in Northern California?

Want to pay for my 2 sons for a training class so they can learn the basics, etc...

However, I want the instructor to be an established shooter (either prior military or IDPA), not some random guy "telling his opinion".

    Thanks!

Whereabouts NorCal? Bay Area? Check out Threat Scenarios. East Bay near Concord, check out Paladin Tactical. Rifle and pistol training options. Excellent staff, prior military / law enforcement, no BS. Patient crew as long as you listen and act safe. Private lessons can be arranged. I am about to make the same call. Good luck and enjoy.

This is key. Best at teaching brand new shooters? Best at teaching experienced shooters? Marksmanship, defensive or competition? Rifle, pistol or shotgun? Private or group instruction?

Not to soapbox too much here, but the ccw instruction doesn't begin to scratch the surface of mastery of the manual of arms.

It's no more going to prepare you to carry that drivers ed would prepare you for an indy car race or getting your instrument rating prepares you for a dogfight.

The certification classes meet the regulatory requirement for carry but mustn't be construed to indicate mastery.

There are some fine instructor choices on the approved vendors lists as well as some mediocre ones.

I would treat training and certification as two different things. Get lots of the former from as many skilled teachers as you can. Treat certifications as the box checking exercise they must inevitably be in a regulated environment.

              I agree.

I strongly disagree. Yes all cert classes check the box, but some go much farther than others. It is incorrect to say all cert classes are the same. McDonalds and In-N-Out both serve hamburgers but I barely tolerate the former and enjoy the latter.

I always encourage potential students to seek the cert class they believe offers them the best value. Why suffer through a 16 hour class when you can enjoy it?
