LASD - DOJ investigating LASD gun permit applications

“The U.S. Department of Justice on Thursday announced an investigation into the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s handling of gun permit applications.

The DOJ said in a news release that it was determining whether the department was “engaging in a pattern or practice of depriving ordinary, law-abiding Californians of their Second Amendment rights.”

The U.S. Department of Justice announced an investigation into the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department over the processing time for concealed weapons permits.

Hope this gains traction fast. LASD has gotten absurd since Alex Villanueva left.

Amen. Clearly LASD’s response the Bruen’s shall issue command has been “fine, but we’ll staff the CCW department with one deputy who is related to a sloth”.

I picked up my renewal today and asked the deputy about the infamous "do not modify" clause on their CCW license, and she said that "approved and inspected" below refers to the configuration the pistol was in when it was shot during CCW training. "We don't want you changing how the gun shoots after you qualify." I asked about grips and flashlights and she responded with triggers and barrels, etc. The exact language I asked about is below:

"Possessing a weapon or equipment altered from its originally approved and inspected condition, or weapon not listed on the license."

Besides being stupid (adding a new trigger will make it shoot BETTER), there is also ZERO way LASD knows what your pistol looked like when you shot it... CCW classes don't take photos or make notes. So the whole thing is dumb.

Sometimes we're our own worse enemies. Mostly this is people making more of this requirement than what it really is.

              Here's a thought, whether or neither good/bad:
It may be considered a good thing (for some folks) the ccw permit is only 2 years as it won't be too long before renewal and re-qualification can be done for those folks who want to make changes to their ccw handguns.

The bad thing is the time, expense, and bother of renewing every two years.

Perhaps qualify with one configuration. Buy a 2nd handgun of the same model used test the various modifications the owner wishes to try. Do make a handgun decision at renewal time which can be l lived with for the next 2 years.

LASD’s approach to CCW applications/processing has been dysfunctional for years. Before Bruen, during Villanueva’s tenure, an LA Times investigation showed evidence that large campaign donors to Villanueva had their CCW applications processed and approved pretty quickly. IIRC, two or three deputies who processed CCW applications and reported directly to Villanueva were suspended when the story broke. After Bruen, under Luna, LASD implemented its “waiting list to apply” which, I am sure, everyone here agrees is a feature and not a bug. I would not be surprised if LASD starts processing applications faster now, given Bondi’s announcement.
