San Francisco CCW Permit Application Costs INCREASED

I'm applying for a CCW in San Francisco City. So far, the SFPD have been very accommodating, friendly, and clear. I am now at the stage where I need to schedule my psych evaluation, which I understand was a flat $150 fee. I received my invitation from "LEPS" (a private corporation called Law Enforcement Psychological Services) to schedule an online zoom appointment, which would cost $500. I responded to the email asking if this was just because the appointment was online, or if there were any alternatives. They did not reply. A few weeks later, I emailed the CCW team at SFPD asking about the increase in costs. They haven't replied yet either.

Has anyone seen any news, notification, or other information about this increase in cost? I knew the process would be expensive and painful, but this is getting ridiculous.

EDIT - I posted over on reddit, and someone came back with a response that explains what happened:

State law used to cap psych evals at $150. SB2 removed the cap, so agencies can now charge actual cost.

Yea, so the previous law is no longer on the legislative information website, but I was able to find it on another website.

Previous PC 26190 (f)(1): "The applicant may be charged for the actual cost of the testing in an amount not to exceed one hundred fifty dollars ($150)." (Repealed on 01/01/2024)

Current PC 26190 (e)(1): "The applicant may be charged for the actual cost of the assessment." (Operative on 01/01/2024)

Here is the full text of SB2 if you want to read it.

THAT is seriously EFF'd up. And patently unconstitutional...although it's going to take lawsuits to get them to knock this crap off.

You might also try reaching out/emailing the California 2A groups...CRPA, FPC, etc., and ask them if they are aware of this and/or have any advice. $500 is nuts!

Does SF require a psych eval at renewal too?

I'm not sure if the renewal requires a psych eval. If I had to guess, it probably won't matter for me, because they will change the rules by the time I need to renew anyway.

Currently on the SFPD CCW website, it states for renewals:

"If there is compelling evidence to indicate that an additional psychological test is necessary, undergo an additional psychological test."

It's too early to tell, but as many of us are approaching renewals early next year; we will soon find out if another psych eval is required.

I live i SF and have thought about CCW many times. Presently it is a no go for me. Physch exam? No thanks. I also understand they interview neighbors. Oh that should go over well. Lived here for over 40years and only one of my neighbors knows my name. Also a list of CCW holders is available to the public. Oh great! CCW from SF......NO THANKS

They didn't interview my neighbors. I'm friendly with my neighbors, but none of them know that I'm 2A friendly.

Psych exam wasn't bad - the shrink just want to know if you're a risk to yourself/others and most of the questions they asked me were not even related to firearms. It was more about driving under the influence and/or if you have anger issues when driving.
