If a danger to me or my family is that far away, I'm more likely to get in and drive away then to use my car as cover or concealment.

Move away from your vehicle for sure if it is not driveable. Think of it as a bullet magnet. There is very little of it that will provide cover for you. As bullets defeat the sheet metal and other coverings, you will then be exposed to all kinds of secondary projectiles along with the primary ones that tend to shred and tear. I have seen enough images of what happens to individuals taking rounds while inside a vehicle, to know that I need to get away from it.
Create distance away from the threat.
If you engage in certain behavior that may present more of a risk to you while driving, then do something else, or up armor your vehicle. Limit where you drive, or do so only in populated areas.

Or, measure the amount of times you have needed protection from gunfire while driving, and place your energies on developing your ability to be mentally prepared.

Have you asked any LEO's? if they have been in those situations or have any experience? You could even ask some Military members (I have yet to be shot at thankfuly)

But im sure there are some who have and wouldn't mind offering any advice.

Best place to hide if you cant drive out of there is behind the engine block.
I know a LEO friend who has couple of mags sitting in his driver side door, trunk, glove box.

avoidance

concealment (something that hides you but may not stop a bullet)

not necessarily in that order but whatever is available.

The ability for a car to stop bullets is highly dependant upon the bullet and where upon the car it is shot.
As mentioned earlier the engine block may stop a bullet but it is kinda tricky to arrange the situation such that this is an option.

I like the idea of a shoulder holster, left side. Seems you could let one go without taking your jacket off, shooting out the back side. How do you train for that?

Bear with me on this...You prepare by fantasizing; the tactical term is visualizing or mental preparation.

What you do is take any normal situation you're commonly in and go through the options of what danger might present itself and what different options/responses you have available. Don't base your perception of possible attacks or how they occur on what you see on TV or the movies...they are staged for visual appeal. Take a look at real attacks captured on YouTube.

I'd also recommend you read Rory Miller's book Meditations on Violence to get a more realistic view of what happens during an attack
