I was wondering about this. The wait is until January 2012 I have heard. Training, backround check, and interview.............maybe interviews with neighbors and employers? I don't see how the wait is justified.

Not sure where you heard that they were interviewing friends, family and employers but that is not happening. The wait is due to the limited number of applications they accept in one day.

My understanding is that this is purely a staffing issue - at a department about to be downsized again...

the staffing for ccw's has never been downsized, and will not be in the future. remember, the ccw staff is held to a higher standard of accuracy and procedure than normal in house business.

Not knocking the SO in any way, I'm sure they are doing all they can within the limits of their authority. They are processing about 36 new permits per week based on their online appointment system. It's a governor on the issuance of new permits regardless of the underlying reasons.

I was wondering how the layoffs would affect the CCW issuance process. Curious if they would accept volunteers to help in some way.

In fact, I believe that staff has grown and may be able to grow further based on the user fees in question. I wasn't saying that they would get downsized but I am saying that there is no spare capacity in that organization.

Last time they laid off officers it got to the point where they were not even responding to shots fired unless someone was hurt. Depending on where you were in the county it could take 20 minutes+ for a response if they did come. It was pretty bad.

Yeah, too bad there is so much pent up demand from decades of no issue. Wonder how long it will take to get caught up. At 36 a week I'm guessing it will be years. I really hope they find the resources to get caught up and keep the wait times to an absolute minimum. 7 months is a long time, but still not as bad as other counties. I'm worried that renewals may be a problem when all these new permits start coming due in 18 months.
