Hey guys I finally have my CCW interview this coming week with the San Bernardino Sheriffs Dept. and have a few questions for anyone that recently (as in last month or sooner) had their interview.

1. Has anything changed since we just had a new Sheriff sworn in?
2. Can you think of any questions that might arise as a result of the AZ shootings?


Tell me if I am missing anything please. Here is the list of required items/docs/copies I have ready:
How many years do I need to go back?Do they also need individual locking devices?

First off, congrats on taking the steps necessary to obtain a CCW.

Nothing has changed in the county as it isn't a "new" sheriff. Sheriff Hoops was appointed to complete the term of his predecessor and recently won the election, so he's been sheriff for a few years now.

The form tells you everything you need to supply including how far to go back on employment history. It says right in the instructions and on the page you fill out. I can't remember how far it was, (5 years??) but I inadvertently went WAY too far back. No worries.

For your weapons, just transport them legally. I live in a school zone, so I use a nylon satchel and lock the zipper closed with a padlock. Inside, I have four, individual soft "cases". Just bring the guns unloaded, with actions locked back (for pistols). No need to bring any magazines or ammo. They just want to see and run the guns.

Don't sweat the interview. They just want to meet you face to face and get a feel for who you are as a person.

The investigator I spoke with was very professional and relaxed. We talked about a variety of topics. None were gun related.

Regarding the references, tell the four folks who are receiving letters from the sheriff to keep a copy of what they return in case they get lost. A couple of mine got misplaced (likely by my references) and they had to re-send. Also tell them to expect the letters. One of my references wife tossed it as she thought it was a political mailer. The folks at the sheriff's office are very nice and professional. They were nice enough to re-send the letter to him.

Don't forget to include all traffice tickets you may have, including any that don't appear on your DMV record due to traffic school as the PD still has visibility to them. I didn't know exact dates, so I just put approximate ones.

The range class is next and remember to not shoot the red shirts!!!!!

EDIT: Just saw your question above about the AZ shootings. I don't really see how that would have any bearing on your CCW application. SB is a very CCW friendly county as is the SO. I don't think events in AZ will really change that.

Since the change in Sheriff's there have been a few changes in CCW policy. They extended the initial training class to 8 hours, you now have to shoot all guns on license instead of just one and if you change your license after it is issued, you now have to go back to surrender your old license in order to get the new one. If you are local it isn't a big deal, if you are in the outlying areas of the county it is a huge PITA. This leaves you with the choice of surrendering your CCW when you go in to modify your CCW and then wait for them to mail the new one (not being able to carry in the interim), or you drive twice.

As far as issuance policies, that has remained unchanged to my knowledge.

They don't need individual locking devices. I understand they still have people bringing them in cardboard boxes. Leave your magazines at home and make sure the firearm is always pointed in a safe direction. They have had issues with people stupidly pulling a gun out of its case/box where it was pointing at the poor clerk sitting at the desk.
