Never had to use a gun in a defensive situation myself, but if you want a great example of a self-defense shooting, check out the thread QuarterBoreGunner made about his ordeal. He had to shoot a man who robbed his store and tried to kill all the employees.

As a rule of thumb, if a situation has gotten so bad as to require me to produce my weapon, I have to be ready to use it unless the situation defuses itself as a result of displaying the weapon.

I pulled on a few gang members once..I was minding my own business walking through Los angeles and well..They pulled out some flash lights and approached me..I waited until the last minute and pulled the glock 19 out and pistol whipped dem gangstas! SIKE!!!!!

Someone who isnt me pulled a .44 spl on a guy with some serious road rage who got out of his car with a baseball bat. Someone else who isnt me pulled the same firearm on 3 meth heads with chains and a metal rod.

Seems like you would want to be sure you really need it if you pull it. There a lot of crazies out there that might get even more agressive if shown a weapon.
