Call the Riverside CCW unit. Explain the situation & follow their advise. I would expect a requirement for an MD release & proof you are off the pain meds.

Not to thread jack here but I have a question along the same lines.

I have Gout (which is very pain full at times) and my doctor may prescribe vicoden. Now, IF I take it when needed would this exclude me from a CCW?

While you are under the influence, it's probably not a good idea to be carrying. If you have to carry, take OTC meds and just grin and bear it. I have chronic pain in my shoulder and leg and found that Vicodin doesn't relieve the pain any better than Aleve; although the Vicodin does give me more of a euphoric feeling.

I am a security guard and will soon be licensed. Am doing the 100 hour class now and just need to finish it up. We were warned...if you are on meds or up for surgery, then just wait dude. Don't give them a reason. CCW is cool and I am hoping being an armed guard will be one big step in that direction for me too. Can't see PD denying me once I'm carrying open for work. But I would seriouly wait on that. Don't take the chance for a no.

Let me clarify. If I was in pain and had to take a vicoden pill. I would leave my gun at home. I would treat it like drinking alcohol. If any of us were go to a bar we would leave the gun in the car or home. I was just wondering if having a doctors prescription is cause for not being cleared for obtaining a CCW...

I wouldn't mention it unless asked specifically.

As long as you're not addicted to the medications, then there should be no need to deny. Honesty can sometimes help or hinder. I prefer being honest. If your doctor is monitoring your vicoden usage (and he probably is), he can write you a letter saying the prescription is for post-surgical pain relief and your usage indicates you are not abusing the drug.

I have had gout for more than twenty years. It is, as you say, Gobler, excruciating - during attacks I would scream if anyone even lightly touched my toes, and carried a cane for the express purpose of warding people off and creating a safe zone. I'm not sure that even vicoden would help mine, but I take Allopurinol every day and the symptoms completely vanish (unless I forget my meds for a few days). I presume that you've explored that route?

Vicoden affects different people different ways. I've taken it from time to time - usually, but not always, at bed time and I have to say it has, as far as I can tell, no mind altering effect on me whatsoever. Just makes me sleepy, which is why I try to avoid it during the day.

My pain management guy keeps offering me new prescriptions, but I am still using the bottle I got after surgery eighteen months ago - so I guess I'm not an abuser.

Yes, I just started Allopurinol and one other med. I also have a heart condition so we are being careful with the meds. Vicoden affects me in the same way. It just kills the pain but not much else. I also have Gaul stones so I really get the ouchies... I used to carry a sword cane until I found out they were illegal in Cali...

I also have Gout. Well, to be specific, I still have gout, but no longer have gout attacks. It flared up quite a lot for awhile there (more than 50% of the time). I ignored it and never took the preventative medicine my Dr. prescribed.....until, I read that high Uric acid levels can lead to kidney stones!!!!!!!

After reading that, I went to my doctor and asked his advice. I've been on Allopurinol for over four years and haven't had a single attack.

Can you guess what my advice to you will be?

If a preventative medicine isn't an option and you and your doctor choose to stick with Vicodin (which was never prescribed for me), then you may want to talk to the folks who issue your CCW and get their advice.

If your prescription for Vicodin is an infrequent thing (once a year or less), then you're no different than most people whose doctor or dentist tries to prescribe it for various ailments, and in my opinion, it's a non-issue. Simply put, it's not even worth mentioning.

If they prescribe (and you take it) more often than that, you probably should discuss it with the folks who would issue your CCW and follow their advice.

Me and Vicodin, or any prescription pain reliever, have never gotten along, so I tell the Dr. to save the script and not write anything. I just use 1-2 Ibuprophen on the rare occasion that I need anything. That's more than enough for me as I'm sensitive to pain relievers.

BTW, you probably already know this but LOTS of water and cherries, strawberries, etc., are a VERY effective treatment for most folks with gout. They worked far better for me than did Indocin or any of the other, anti-inflammatories they used to prescribe. PM me if you want more info.

                            Good luck,

                            John

Yeah I take the preventative meds and eat foods to help. I also suffer from gallstones which is another killer pain So there are times when both kick in where I need the pain meds but to be fair, I end up sitting on the couch or in bed for the day and never leave the house. I will discuss this with my doctor but he knows that there has been no addiction of any kind to any drug I have taken, it's just not me.
