CCW CHP Audit - I was pulled over and...

    CCW CHP Audit - I was pulled over and here's my story;

Not going to say: where or when, other than it happened in the last year or so ... I will say CHP and that's all I'm going to say about that.

Was I speeding? - Ohhh you-betcha! How fast? No ... not saying.

Were there other vehicles in danger? - no.

Did Officer have me dead to rights? - Ohhh you-betcha!

What was my speed? - Well ... he said it, but I'll only say uhhh ya ... I was going FAST!

    Me: Hands on steering wheel

Officer: (FIRST thing he said) "...see your license, proof of insurance, and registration!" that's all he said - He didn't say why you going so fast or anything!

Me: Hand him my CDL with CCW wrapped around it

Officer: "You have your gun on you now?"

    Me: "Yes Sir"

    Officer: "Where is it?"

    Me: "Left ankle - inside"

    Officer: "Very good"

Me: "I'll have to reach for my glove-box for insurance and registration"

...waiting for instructions from Officer with hands on top of steering wheel..., - Officer thinking about it ...,

Officer: "No - we will not be needing that here"

Officer: Hands me my CDL and CCW and says: "be careful pulling out into traffic - have a good day."

My assessment: I would've absolutely received the ticket - signed it, dot the I's and crossed the T's ... exchanged polite pleasantries and owned it. Officer had me - no question. Do I appreciate no ticket? Yes - I have absolutely been driving slower and more in line with speed limit since the stop.

So now in 21 years of CCW - I have been pulled over 5 times for 1 ticket. Last time I was pulled over was in 2011. My CCW is NOT a get out of ticket free card. I been beating myself up ever since - I think I'm done now. Speed limit for me from nowww on!

Thank you for reading, and thank you Mr. CHP Officer - writing this confession helps me to drive right.

I think the CHP let the CCW holder have a little more lenience.
They understand, a ticket means you will have to notify your IA, and that your CCW could be in jeopardy.
I have yet to have any LE contact where I would have to notify my IA.
    Thanks for sharing

I?m just wondering if the stop rises to the level of official contact (or whatever BS the regs call it)?

      Stopped by lights and siren.
How will the LEO report it in his log? What info will he report? Did he write your info down? If so, and you don?t report it, could that place risk on your ?permit?? However if the LEO made it a blip in his log, and you report it, wouldn?t he then potentially be in hot water?

      Sorry, not sorry.

Usually official contact would be if they ask for ID.

If you walk past one and say hi at a 7-11, likely this would not need reporting (although some Boy Scouts here would create a thread asking if they need to report a social contact)

If you were pulled over up in Mendo, and were scanned face to face with an exchange of valuable information, officer found you were on the right side of law and allowed some leniency for speeding. There can be some shady folk up thataway. Be mindful of your speed, may not receive such good grace next time around. Let the goodtimes roll.

I totally understand speeding. I use to love driving fast before having a ccw especially if I was alone on my motorcycle. Twice I should have received reckless driving tickets but CHP cut me a break . Both tickets were very expensive.
I decided that I'm never going to give this state any more money than I have to .
I have been in contact with a few Leo's since carrying. Mostly because I was a witness. A few times at community events as a volunteer. I'm not afraid to ask how they feel about people having ccws. If they ask me if I have one I tell them I do.
If I were you I would have asked if he was writing up the contact with you or if he ran your name.
I was pulled over for a head light that went out on my home.I was carrying.. He asked for ID. I told him about my ccw and informed him that I was carrying . He told me to get my light fixed without me even giving him my licenses. A few days later we ran into each other in a parking lot. I thank him again for not making a big deal about me carrying the first time we met. We talked for a while. He invited me to go to the range with him and some friends.
Most LEO'S support CCWs .Atlases the one's I have talked to

I've witnessed the change in officer demeanor upon presenting the CCW. Went from suspect to peer in a nanosecond. Cops like us as a whole and you caught that break because of it. I always thank them for placing themselves between us and the asshats, addicts and crazies.
Human beings only have two ways to deal with one another: reason and force. Force has no place as a valid method of social interaction, and the only thing that removes force from the menu is the personal firearm, as paradoxical as it may sound to some.

The U.S. city with the most restrictive gun laws in the nation, Washington, D.C., has the highest murder rate at 24 per 100,000.
The state with the most unrestrictive gun regulations, Vermont, has the lowest murder rate at 0.48 per 100,000.

Personally, I can not remember the last time I was pulled over. I'm never in a hurry, and have no need for exceeding the speed limit. And I alway use my turn signals.

I haven't been pulled over in years. Last time was by a CHP in Bishop late one night. I think he was looking for DUI drivers (I was stone-cold sober and did nothing stupid). He said he pulled me over for modified/loud exhaust (my truck is a little loud). He gave me fix-it ticket for loud exhaust.

I wasn't carrying at the time and didn't have a CCW. I wonder if he'd give me pass today, now that I do?

I drive the speed limit and carefully follow the law. All of the deputies I've talked with casually are glad to have good guys with guns around.

Since I received my CCW I am very much a safe driver. I also use my cruise control on the freeway to ensure that I am within the speed limit.

Mostly because the CCW crowd supports law and order, and cops by extension. Also verified good guys (no record) up until that encounter. There are plenty of bad guys out there to mess with, why hinder the support that they currently need every last bit.

Next time pull out a thin blue line facemask and put on the dashboard for good measure.

There's virtually no way your IA would know you were stopped, unless that Chipper said something that indicated he would contact your IA, because of what you were doing (even though no citation). If that were the case, then yes, I'd notify my IA.

But as a regular course - no cite, no notification from me.

I have been a CCW holder for over 40 years and pulled over a number of times in those 40+ years. Two points here: 1) I NEVER wait to give the officer my license. The very first words out of my mouth (window down, hands on steering wheel} is "I need to advise you that I have a concealed weapon permit and I have a weapon on me". It has never been an issue. Most thanked me for letting them know. When they ask for license, registration, and proof of insurance, that is when I also give them my CCW permit. i always laminate my permits and it's kept right next to my CDL in my wallet. 2) Doing so has NEVER gotten me out of a ticket!
