I recently went through my first SB2-mandated 8-hr renewal class hosted by Troy of Willis Home Defense based out of the Coachella Valley area in Riverside County. I was initially really concerned that the added 4hrs of class time would mean that we just had a dry lecture for 6hrs and then did our shooting qualifications for 2hrs. But I was really pleased overall with this class. With the exception of being MANDATED to participate in an 8hr class (which I'm sure is also reflected in increasing the course price no matter which vendor you go to), I certainly enjoyed the class and would recommend it to anyone in RIVCO who needs to renew their CCW.
The class began at 6:00AM at the Palm Springs Gun Club in Thousand Palms. After a safety brief, we immediately jumped into our shooting qualifications with the different firearms we wanted to add to our CCW. We continued with scenario-based shooting training for another couple hours. Troy shared with us that this portion of the class is not legally necessary. I was afraid that we'd be burning through a couple hundred rounds for this (not really needed) portion of the class, but realistically we only used about another 20-30rds tops.
We finished up at the range around 10am and then all drove over to Yellow Mart in Indio for the classroom portion. Again, I was concerned that this would be dry lecturing for four hours but Troy made the classroom portion as interactive as possible. This course is definitely a 'participation is mandatory' type of class. He reviewed the legally mandated topics such as use of force law, but then also touched on the emotional/psychological impact of shooting someone which is a new portion required by SB2. And then we finished with watching videos of shootings and then discussed as a class what went right and what went wrong.
Overall I thought this was a great class. As mentioned above, I'm not thrilled about the class costing more time and money than what used to be the norm for 4-hr renewals. But Troy made this class a great value for the cost with what training and teaching you do get out if it.
