Any point in applying for CCW right now? (Orange County)

Sorry, I've been living under a rock and wish I did all this last year.

Anyway, I see OC is processing very quickly. But with SB2 in effect Jan 1, any real benefit of applying now? Or is it better to just wait to see what happens to SB2 and then apply next year?

    Considerations:
    1) If I apply now: Worried I pay alot of money now, and CCW is essentially useless due to SB2 starting Jan 1.
    2) If I apply next year: Might be harder to get and more expensive (more training and psych evaluation), but there will be more clarity hopefully on the application of SB2.

    Thoughts?

Apply now, no matter what that puts you on a quicker road to carrying legally.

SB2 may be struck down in the courts at any time, then you'd be GTG. And there are still places you CAN carry. I know, SB2 sucks, but either get out of the state or do your best to fight it. Just my 2 cents.

    Good luck.

Get it in now. I believe there is a court date set in early December that could possibly place an injunction of some of SB2 thats related to sensitive places. On the actual application itself, you won't pay upfront in OC. You pay later when approved. The livescan fee you would need to do ASAP. Training you could do later in the process if you wanted to.
It would be interesting to find out if you fall under this years rules or next years upon approval since I am sure for you this process will go into next year.

Apply, legal climate is constantly changing. Get on the wait list now instead of deciding you want it later.

You think? I saw on Reddit and other threads of people getting approved and done with the process in 4-6 weeks. I guess with holidays it might delay things tho

If you're aiming for 4-6 weeks, you can get everything on your end done in that time frame (livescan, all documentation submitted, training, etc.). It would come down to when your interview date with them gets scheduled. They have been known to bump up interview times during the process so some people have gotten them quickly. This link will give you some current info on that:

As others have said, start the process now. At this point, it's a toss-up if the carry restrictions portions of SB2 will be negated by the court.

Don't wait. Restrictions have been paired down in Sacramento a little and the courts will further reduce if not out right overturn it.

You need to ask yourself why you want to carry to begin with.

Is it to save your life or is it to follow the law?

If you found yourself in a life or death situation would you rather have illegally carried but be alive or have legally not carried but be dead?
ATF Form 4473: If a frame or receiver can only be made into a long gun (rifle or shotgun), it is still a frame or receiver, not a handgun or long gun.

FWIW, according to concealedcarry.com, the CA CCW is honored by 27 states. If you travel, that's something to consider. If you add Arizona the number goes up to 35. You can use your training cert from CA to get Arizona. You just need to get new fingerprints on the old style paper card. But a lot of states are adopting permitless carry so it isn't as big a deal as it used to be. Of course, it's best to check with your destination state to make sure it's legal.
