What 3 guns for CCW?

$5k Nighthawk 1911's, S&W's with barrel issues, Kimber's with finish issues, issues with Kahrs, it's miserable shooting revolvers with 2" barrels, etc.OK, so Glocks are out for you. This cuts down on your available on-roster choices.
Larger 9, 45 or 357:
Going through the guns in several LGS, the larger non-Glock options are still pretty good.
Going through the roster for a larger 9mm pistol, I found:
SIG P229
SIG SP2022
Beretta 92
Beretta Px4
CZ P-01
HK P2000
1911 in 9mm
Springfield XD.
I've excluded the SIG P6/P239 because it's out of production and parts support is lacking.
There are no on-roster 9mm 1911 Commanders. Your choices are the Springfield EMP 9mm and two Springfield Governments in 9mm. You'll have to move up to 45 ACP. Dan Wesson has their Bobtail Commander, which is a very nice gun. Wilson Combat has a CQB, Professional, Professional Elite, Sentinel, Stealth in 4". Nighthawk has the Predator II and III, T3, Talon II, and Talon III available. I'd give the WC Stealth a hard look despite me being a complete Nighthawk Kool Aid drinker and advocate.
Also note that Nighthawk's "Express Gunsmithing Initiative" can convert an on-roster T3 in 45 into one of four 9mm options. But, it'll cost you 5G's. https://www.nighthawkcustom.com/ca-e...ing-initiative
Of course, you could just get one of the on-roster 1911's in 45 ACP and be done.
As for revolvers, I discussed the cons. I'm seeing 3" Pythons in the stores now. I really like my Colt Anaconda 6" (2020 version). Obviously, you have many options from Ruger and S&W. Perhaps take a look at the K-Frames, the 586 L-Comp, and especially the K-Comp. This gets you 357 Magnum with a compensator to assist with recoil. They're pretty nice. As usual, with all new S&W revolvers, inspect it carefully to make sure the barrel is installed correctly and so forth.
There is no point to a snubby revolver with 2" barrel or less. If you decide to do it anyway, make sure to test your ammunition in gel. Grit your teeth and practice with it. Just so you know: I had a near mint S&W Model 19 from the early 1980's with 2 1/2" barrel. I sold it off because it just didn't cut it as a 357 Magnum revolver. It was the same size as a Glock 19 and miserable to shoot with 357 Magnum. It was fine with 38 Special, but the advantage of the revolver is the magnum round. Don't get me started on the 642/442...

I've now seen several instances of the Kimber K6 having some nasty finish issues. One guy reported Kimber fixed his and the other is currently thinking about what to do. These were transfers off the Internet. Check the gun closely before purchase. (annnndddd...I cannot find the link on the forum with the pictures)
***
Kahr reliability: I've had two bad PM9's and a K9. I have one CM9 that works well enough, though I haven't pushed it with more than 100-200 rounds in a day. I call a 75% failure rate pretty poor. But, it's your choice.
Verify that Kahr 380 carefully. My LGS in the past when those were new had a bunch of returns. When that happened, he'd stop carrying them and only order them upon request.
All that said, I really like the K9. I loved the stainless finish with wood stocks. It carried great. But, it just didn't work well and it went back to the factory with a live round in the chamber because the slide froze shut. It's still a great feeling gun and if it works, it's the Kahr I recommend.

Takeaway from this...just get a Glock!Last edited by Vinnie Boombatz; 11-08-2023, 4:49 AM.sigpicComment

I have 3 on my permit, based on restrictions from.my IA.
The 365xl, because I can carry and conceal it easily in a pocket sticky holster or appendix in a TRex arms sidecar very easily. I shoot it well, at 10 yds, key holing 3 to 4 out of 10. I shoot Sigs very well. Train at least 1 time per.month. Never had an issue with any ammo, no ftf, fte issues. I have a romeo red dot on it and work that as well as the fixed sights. It's cowitnessed, btw. Scale of 1 to 10, 9.8 all day long.
Also, a G19 gen, that has been stipled a nd double double under cut to help my purchase on the pustol. I did not care for the smoothish grip, or the finger grooves. I havealso replaced the slude with milled and added a Trijicon rds. I shoot it fair, 3 to 3.5 inch group at 10 yds. Semi- fast rate of fire. I have only had issues with LAX reloads fir ftf, fte. No other ammo has caused an issue. Sac.. Scale of 1 to 10, an 9.1, upside is after market support for anything you might want to do. Plus if the defication strikes tge rotating oscillator, you are very likely to find a buddy with a G19/17 magazine.
3rd is my Kimber Pro Carry II. 45 cal. easy to carry, easy to shoot, but only 8 with a flush magazine. I keyhole shot 5 out of 10 very often at 10 yds. I did change the grip and add skateboard tape around the front to improve my grip. No red dot or aftermarket stuff. Love the feel and accuracy at 10 yds. heavier than both other pistols, but that helps keep.the kuzzle flip down.
I am not big on revolvers because I actually learned to shoot properly on a full sized, Colt 1911, WWII vintage in the Corps. So a 1911 will always have a soft spot in my heart.
Love this thread, lots of great info, points of views and perspectives that I would have never considered.Comment

For me:
1. Ruger LCP
2. Shield 9mm
3. G19
The LCP is carried the most because of it's size. I figure close range would be the most likely scenario so it should work. The LCP2 is now available so I would go with that. Better trigger, more reliable. The LCP one is hard for me to shoot, I have L-XL hands and the trigger is a very long pull. So I upgraded to a Galloway Sweet Pea, and an SS guide rod. Also a mag pinky extension, rubber palm swell grip and a CTS trigger guard laser just to make the pistol a little bigger in my hand. YMMV
Shield is great, no mods needed other than a flat mag spring for one extra round. P365 is probably better, but not enough for me to warrant a new purchase. YMMV
G19 speaks for itself. Light, reliable, accurate. YMMVArmy Veteran 2/31st F.A., 101st Airborne

List the guns that you are most proficient with and which you will want to carry most often. A gun is no good for CCW if you never want to carry it around. Having said that, I must be old school because about 85%+ of the time I'll have a full size 1911 on me. And it's extremely rare that I don't have a gun on me when out and about.NRA Benefactor Life Member

I did 3 for about first 6 years.
Carried one of them 90% of the time..then 2nd about 8%...3rd....
About 5 years ago I dropped down to 2
Gen4 G19 and a S&W 442-2 Air weight /Jframe .38 spcl
I only use the j frame when needing bit more lite weight when mountain biking etc..
a G19 with 16 rounds on the belt gets a bit much when jumping around dirt trails on a bikeBeans and BulletsComment

365x w/RMRcc
320 Classic
HK USP .45
As much as the 365 is growing on me, when I renew, I'll likely change it to my P2000sk in 9mm. As soon as I can procure a p2000 in .40, That will likely replace my 320 classic. The USP will stay. I cannot get comfortable carrying a striker with one in the chamber. My mental hangup. I'm going all hammer fired with a decocker.
All that said, I'm loving the red dots. So, the expense of machining my HK's will be a sizable one.Would like to buy 357 Maximum ammo.Comment

I get it Dennis. I trust the Glock in a quality holster, but I still get it because I cannot get my mind into carrying a 1911 properly. Like you said, my hangup.Buy made in USA whenever possible.Comment

What 3 guns for CCW?
I'm only allowed three in SF as well.
I went with:
1) CZ P-01 (decocker)
2) CZ RAMI (manual safety)
3) Shield 1.0 (manual safety)
I also have other carry candidates including a P229 and G20sf but ended up going with the smallest/thinnest ones.
I may go with a P365 down the road but my renewal isn't for another year and a half and I don't want to try hassling with SFPD to swap anything out; at least not right away anyways.
I mostly carry the Shield with RDS and only occasionally the others.Last edited by CalPatriot63; 11-14-2023, 4:03 PM.Comment

Good grief, this question involves too much thinking. Pick out three guns you’d like to carry and go with it. It’s not rocket science, nor is it that difficult to make a decision. If it is, then one probably isn’t mentally prepared to be carrying concealed in public to begin with.sigpic

P365xl (main carry)
Cz P01 (clothes dependent/night stand gun)
Springfield XD 45 (was the first gun I bought)
The sig and cz will stay as my main carry guns but on my renewal I?ll be changing my XD for a 10mm/357 for camping gun I usually take me cz for camping but after reading sounds like a need to have a minimum of a .40.Comment

#1: Sig 365 with Holosun 507K-GR, talon grips.
#2: Glock 19 with Holosun, talon grips.
Carry at 3 o'clock.
Holsters are all from www.REVKEL.com. They have superb retention and the guy who designs and makes them uses them in competitive shooting.
I have 7 guns on my permit, but only really carry the 2 above. I don't want to confuse the brain with too many choices when SHTF. KISS.
Everything is 9mm.
