    Griffith Observatory

Being owned and operated by the city of LA, does anybody have experiences whether CCW is allowed when entering?

I went there last summer, didn’t see any signs or metal detectors then.

I have not been there in about 6 months but I have spent considerable time there over the years as I am sort of an amateur astronomer (in a past life) and so I have spent dozens and dozens of nights there doing astronomy outreach (e.g. public star parties) and other events.

You should be GTG because they do not have metal detectors nor do they do any security, searching, etc.

While on the topic, make sure you understand how their parking works and plan accordingly. Parking at the GO is miserable. If you just drive up the hill with the intension of visiting it is very possible that you will have to walk a half mile (or longer) from where you have to park. Their parking situation is an absolute disaster.

According to LA City code, it would be illegal to carry in a city park. See LAMC 63.44 B 21 for clarification.

            21. No person shall carry or discharge any firearms, firecrackers, fireworks, rockets, model rockets, torpedoes, airgun or slingshot.

              LAMC 63.44 B 21
Is in conflict with the superior county code of neglect discharge and its exemptions.
              ? 13.66.040. Discharging firearms?Restrictions
              ? 13.66.010. Use of weapons permitted when;
This chapter, except as otherwise provided in this Part 1, does not prohibit the discharge of any rifle, shotgun, pistol, revolver or firearm of any kind, or the shooting of any arrow or other missile, when necessary so to do to protect life or property, or to destroy or kill any predatory or dangerous animal.
If you are protecting life or property.
It is further reinforced by Article 1 Section 1 of the California Constitution, you have the inalienable right to protect yourself and to protect your property and to obtain safety.
There is no THT to support the city code either.
Firecrackers, fireworks are the only areas the city has authority.
The discharging of, ?any rifle, shotgun, pistol, revolver or firearm of any kind, or the shooting of any arrow or other missile,? is specifically exempt for certain purposes logically making it mandatory for the exempt object to be there.
If you require the need to protect yourself, your property in a city park you are legally able to do so making the carrying, bearing of the exempt self defense tool legal in a city park.

I see where it allows for discharging a firearm to protect life or property BUT, it does NOT allow for possession of a firearm within areas that local laws prohibit it, does it? In the end, I guess it's up to the individual to decide if the risk of being prosecuted for a city code (and probably loosing your LTC) is worth the risk. Personally, I don't want to spend $20K-$50K to try to defend myself against prosecution.

Now, if you really believe your argument, you obviously don't care if SB2 passes or not. Using your logic, the state or local authorities really can't stop you from carrying anywhere within the state, right?

                  CSACANNONEER,
If the superior law(s) county code and state constitution, allow for the discharging of a firearm, for self defense, and defense of property, or against dangerous predatory animals, coyotes, then it is implied that you can possess in that location. There is no THT for restrictions I parks, (public property) unless it is a ?sensitive place?.
Griffith park and the observatory are NOT sensitive places, there is no controlled entry.
Yes, I will ignore that which is null and void due to supremacy of law.

                      DolphinFan,

                      A couple of quick points:

                      1) The Los Angeles County Code is not superior to the L.A. City Municipal Code. The County of Los Angeles and the City of Los Angeles are both "Local Agencies" as defined by Government Code section 50002 and enjoy the same level of authority in their codes.

                      2) CSACannoneer is correct in his point that Article 1 of the California Constitution only provides the right to defend property. It does not guarantee access to any particular tools to accomplish that function. You are quoting the "Text, History and Tradition" language from NYSRPA, but you seem to be forgetting that NYSRPA did not interpret any provisions of the California Constitution, and that NYSRPA has not yet changed any of California's laws.
If you build a man a fire, you'll keep him warm for the evening. If you set a man on fire, you'll keep him warm for the rest of his life.

I don't bother with signs, they confuse me. Metal detectors on the other hand are pretty straight forward. It is better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it.

Los Angeles is a Charter City. That means it has wide latitude to set and enforce its own laws.

IMHO, LA is pretty much a $hi+hole to be avoided similar to syphilis.

I disagree, syphilis is relatively easy to cure and burns for a few days. LA has been burning for years and can?t be cured.
